| Show LIKE THE OUTLOOK j John Dern and Party Return From i Nevada I 1 BIG PLANT FOR DEXTER I + I MAN IMPROVEMENTS ABE BEING MADE 1 New Double Compartment Shaft Has Been Started Which Cut the Big Ore Ledge at a Depth of 300 Feet I Water Is Troublesome at resent res-ent But Can Be Handled i L iI I I President John Dern of the Dexter property at Tuscarora Nev accompanied accom-panied by his gets Messrs Meserve I and Southworth of Boston returned yesterday morning from a weeks inspection in-spection of the great Nevada gold camp highly pleased with their visit It was Mr Derns first trip to the mine since lie bought into the property a year or i so ago Talking of operations at the mine Jir Dern said that in a very short time now I the Dexter would be equipped with one of the finest hoisting and pumping plants in the state and the first one to be run by electric power Owing to the Impashable roads the property had to be closed down for apart a-part of the winter for lack of fuel and supplies but everything was in good running order again The property of the Dexter company is traversed by a large east and west vein that averages twenty to thirty feet In width which carries good values in gold and cutting cut-ting through the ground in a north and V south direction is a series of small ledges which contain very rich streaks I of free gold quartz The old workings of the Dexter had r attained a depth of 150 feet when water became troublesome and a new double I compartment shaft was started to cut thi vein at greater depth mil enable the company to better work the mine Last Tuesday night soon after Mr DellS arrival the big ledge was cut in the new shaft at a depth of about TOO feet but water came in so rapidly t that the sinking pump was lost in the r phuffle and wiien 11 Dern left the water was being pumped out with a pump borrowed from a neighboring mine In sinking the new shaft one of the north and south veins was also cut at a depth of some 200 feet and samples sam-ples taken from it carried very high values As soon as the shaft is drained a station tion will be cut on the OOfoot level and s a sump excavated With this work t completed the company will begin drift i I ing and sloping and Mr Dern expects that biir returns will result as 200 feet 1 of practically dry ground will then be open to exploration The Dexter mill is steadily pounding aay on a good class of ore from the t dump of the old workings and with I its recently added settling tank equipment equip-ment is making a gratifying showing In order to supplant the steam with electric power and discard the former I at both mine and mill a great power I I station has been erected on Chicken stton creek some fifty miles from the mine The water to run the plant is bought from Jack creek a distance of one mile in a wooden flume and from there to the blind 4000 feet in a twofoot steel pipe with a drop of 420 feet in that distance Dern estimates that lant Mr this plant will supply suilicient energy to operate the hoist pumps and compressor at the Dexter mine all the machinery at the mill and in addition supplying a I many other companies in the district a i wish to use it a well The installation t installa-tion of this magnificent power plant 7 the additions to the mill and the splendid i splen-did equipment for the mine has cost the Dexter a small mint of money but i Mr Dern is confident that every dollar has been well spent and is enthusiastic over the outlook for the future both of the Dexter company and the whole district j dis-trict |
