| Show A DIG MOTHERS APPEAL AT LAST WA DEPARTMENT RELEASES HER SON Clarence S Curtis Ordered Honorably Discharged But He May Not Reach Home For Months I Clarence S Curtis now serving with the valiant Utah volunteers In the war against the Philippine insurgents has been ordered honorably discharged Information In-formation to this effect was received yesterda by Governor Wells the tele gram to him from Assistant Adjutant General Ward at Washington stating The secretary of war has ordered Clarence S Curtis a Utah volunteer sent to the Presidio San Francisco for discharge No one could have been more appreciative appre-ciative of the good news than was Artier Ar-tier man Curtis mother when the announcement of her sons release from the army reached her Bedridden with an Incurable malady the devoted mother has repeatedly implored President Presi-dent McKinley and the secretary of war directly and through Governor Wells and Senator Rawlins to return her son to ner before her life ebbs away and the angel of death closes her eyes In eternal eter-nal sleep In further justification of her plea the good woman urged that I her son was in danger of going totally blind an affection of the left eye haying hay-Ing threatened the sight of the other Early in this ear and Just before the conflict with the Filipinos commenced com-menced young Curtis mothers entreaty treaty for his release was answered by the war department saying that he together with twentyfour other Utah boys recommended for discharge by Governor Wells would be released if the recommendations were concurred in by their respective commanding offi cers and provided further that Gen eral Otis could spare them At a later date the Invalid mother was informed that the volunteers would be returned as soon a regular soldiers could be sent to take thpf nlaces While Governor Wells was out of town last week the young soldiers mother addressed a last pathetic appeal ap-peal and soon after his return the governor took the matter up again and urged the war department for the boys release Senator Rawlins joining in the request The reply that came yesterday yester-day shows me last appeal was not in vain When the released volunteer who has bravely borne his hare of the burden of battles on the island will return home is problematical Governor Wells has received advices from the war department de-partment that It Is doubtful If any transports will be returning to the United States before all the volunteers are to be brought home I this calculation cal-culation is correct young Curtis will not be enabled to return to his mothers moth-ers bedside until all his comrades come home probably three months yet Clarence Curtis enlisted with Wedge woods recruits last June and his home Is in this city His mother resides at 563 Third street |
