| Show BRAVE SALT LAKE MAN + George K Smith Saves Woman From Drowning In New York 5 WAS WOULDBE SUICIDE I HIS DESPERATE FIGHT WITH I HER IN THE WATER VAt 5 At Police Station Smith Raised His Hat to Her But She Looked Him Squarely In the Face and Passed By Without Speaking to Him I Special to The Herald New York May 20George K Smith a former resident of Salt Lake where he was in the railroad business between be-tween that city and Denver came here but a short time ago and is now in the employ of the Central road in New Jersey Yesterday he risked his life to save that of a woman who had jumped from a ferryboat into North river with suicidal intent V I The woman was Delia Walters matron mat-ron of a hospital in Bayonne N J who has recently been suffering with a mental men-tal disorder Smith noticed the woman as she was climbing over the boatrall and tried to reach her in time to prevent pre-vent her Jumping overboard He was too late to accomplish this however and as Miss Walters saw him coming toward her she plunged head first into the riverA river-A deckhand was ordered to bring a rope and make It fast to the boat and throw the other end into the water The deckhand was too slow for Smith and he ran back and grabbing a heaving line from the rack threw one end overboard over-board and making the other fast to the rail tore off his shoes and vaulted over the rail Had Sunk For Second Time The woman had sunk for the second time when he reached her side but as he grasped hold of her she had strength enough left to light him off and tore the skin off his left hand He obtained a good hold however swam back to the dangling rope and held on A life preserver pre-server was thrown over but he ignored ig-nored this as did the woman and in the meantime another rope had been thrown from the ferryboats deck to the deck of a tug which had steamed to the scene and the two were hauled aboani I the tug The woman was taken to the Hudson street hospital She was later arraigned ar-raigned in a police court and discharged dis-charged As she was leaving court Smith raised his hat to bid her goodbye good-bye but she looked him square in the I face him and passed without speaking to |
