Show ROBERTS AROUSES THE f PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Utah Congressman the Subject of a Heated Discussion At the Denver General Assembly Special to The Herald Denver May OThe general assem i bly of the Cumberland Presbyterian church will probably adopt the Roberts Rob-erts resolution directing that congress refuse the representative from Utah a I seat in the house The resolution was presented to the assembly at its meeting meet-ing yesterday but no vote was taken The feeling over this resolution in the assembly is of a deeper nature than that aroused by any question for years without the tenets of the denomination denomina-tion Scarcely had Moderator Halsell put the matter before the assembly than a dozen delegates were on their feet to make speeches They woe anticipating an-ticipating a hot debate over the resolution reso-lution The first recognized was Elder J E Jones of Dresden Tenn and one of that states ablest attorneys Mr Moderator and Fellow Commissioners Commis-sioners of the Church began Elder Jones I do not believe that congress I will thank a religious body for interfering inter-fering In this matter I is a serious question and one which does not concern I con-cern any as much as the heads of the nation I Is a question of the const 1 l I tution of the United States and congress con-gress is supposed to know more about that constitution than churches or private pri-vate individuals I is a matter which is affecting the entire count I say be careful Do not let your zeal for the good and true allow you to overstep over-step the bounds of your privileges Mr Roberts is charged with being immoral in that he is a polygamist That may be true Still it Is not a matter which this assembly should I take up We are not in a position to I judge this Let congress do its duty I in the matter Jones was interrupted frequently by halfsmothered ejaculations from other delegates many of which were plainly audible and displayed warm dlsapprov al of his remarks The moderator rapped sharply with his gavel when Mr Jones had coda cod-a scores were waiting to be heard It looked as though Mr Jones views were upheld by no more than a small minority After some warm discussion Mr Jones moved that the matter be tabled until later and taken up under the order of unfinished business The mo tlon was carried |
