Show Looking Bacl( At The Bowl Games By PETE FRITCHIE Looking back on the college football finale the bowl games the best were between be-tween Georgia and Pitt and Nebraska and Clemson. THE ROSE Bowl was a dud. Iowa never got into it and the Cotton Bowl was not that thrilling until the last quarter. But then Texas' rally made it a good one. Penn State showed it might have been the equal of any team in the nation when it handled Southern Cal with points to spare. Pitt looks better, bet-ter, too, in view of Penn State's showing and the Panthers' Panth-ers' comeback against tough Georgia. NEBRASKA, ONE suspects, sus-pects, had the best personnel, in size. But they couldn't handle a Clemson team so fired up. Clemson had the defense, and except for two drives, in the first and last quarters, the Tigers shut down that potent Cornhusker offense. That's incredible. in-credible. It's been a long time since Clemson was a major power but one remembers those years just before the war and Frank Howard's teams. They were tough. And he was tougti and a wit. When asked at the Orange Bowl recently why he had given up coaching he said: "I RETIRED because of illness. ill-ness. The alumni got sick of me." |
