Coach Baker tried everything every-thing he could, inserting three "guards on defense ta.try to ' chase the quick Braves, and then going back with his tall timber on offense. It worked to prefection. ONLY THE foul shots kept him from tasting victory. Credit Cre-dit Bountiful though, they made the shots when they needed them. Guard Lex .Brown got in one of those grooves where everything he threw up went in and ended the evening with 16 points. Senior Dan Bell went to work inside to chip in another 15 for the winners. Center Greg Housekeeper had another fine effort with 14 for the Cats with forward Bruce Bishop adding 12. assists. Those points came on an incredible shooting night in which he scored 17 times on 22 attempts from the field and two for three from the foul line. When asked about his effort all John said was ' 'I thought Lynn Andersen played great at point guard." COACH RON Johansen realized during the week that he didn't have the quickness to battle the Highland press. What he did have though was the height to throw over it, and that's what they did. At times the Vikes were huge, with Andersen being a 6' 5" point guard. In regulation the two teams battle back and forth with each one taking a turn at holding an eight point advantage. The key to the entire contest may have come at the start of the third period where the Vikings out-scored out-scored the Rams 12-2. HIGHLAND LED by two with about 30 seconds to go but the Vikes evened the count with a followup bucket by White. The Rams then ran the time down to two seconds but missed the last ditch effort. In overtime the two sides exchanged buckets but with four seconds left the Vikes were down by one point and had the ball out under their own basket. "We set up a play to go to John since he was the hot hand," explained Johansen. Johan-sen. "Rasmussen threw the ball inbounds to Andersen. He let it bounce once to save time and then rifled a pass to Scott Mabey down the side. John was lined up on the opposite side of Scott and when the pass was made he broke across court to the foul line. Scott hit him with the pass and John hit the little jumpshot for the win. It's about time things went right for us," he added. ALTHOUGH White en- " joyed a great individual effort this win was by no means a one man show. Mabey poured in 14 points while junior Kevin Smith added 12. One of the biggest surprises : may have been in the play of junior Lynn Andersen who actually ran the offense from the point. "He showed a lot of confidence in bringing the ball up against the press when he had to," noted one Viking assistant coach. VIEWMONT SEEMS to be a team that is getting better with each game while the Rams continued to have their trouble with Davis County schools. |
