Show November Is Month To Save On Energy By TOM BUSSELBERG BOUNTIFUL - In case you thought energy conservation was nearly dead, you may not be far from wrong. But to give it a little new life, November has been named as energy conservation month in the state with special efforts planned for two days to emphasize conservation. TRANSPORTATION officials of-ficials of the Wasatch Front Regional Council have been told that Nov. 5 and Nov. 15 have been pegged as specific days where energy conservation conserva-tion will be emphasized. "Energy Day" will be observed ob-served Nov. 5, a Sunday, said Mick Crandall, WFRC planner. "We will try to eliminate all use of energy that day with people preparing prepar-ing meals ahead of time or eating coldcuts so they don't have to use their ovens." Emphasis will also be placed on making minimal use of automobiles. A REAL test could come Nov. 15, "Ride Promotion Day," when employees will be urged to carpool. "Maybe we will be able to work out an incentive for state employees (to carpool or use buses) by getting the state to let them go home 15 minutes early," Mr. Crandall said. In addition, Nov. 30-Dec. 1-2 will see an energy fair staged at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City with booths to be presented by the WFRC and other groups. TO AID employers in promoting energy conservation, conserva-tion, booklets have been prepared and distributed to employers with 100 or more employees, he said. "We will follow this up with special energy shows and a 13-page booklet to be placed in newspapers." news-papers." But John Inglish, Utah Transit Authority information official questioned effectiveness effec-tiveness of the booklet. "Will people really bother with a 13-page booklet when they've been bombarded with so many things? A good TV spot might do the job." HE SAID UTA must keep a . "low profile" on energy conservation con-servation promotion due to inadequate facilities. "We, could use another 120 buses but don't have the equipment to maintain them." He emphasized, however, that in his view, carpools had been stressed all over the country but weren't really working. Public transportation transporta-tion has to give the answer, he said. WFRC IS working out a contract with federal energy officials to finance the energy conservation promotion. In other action, the transportation trans-portation board approved a proposed metropolitan airport air-port systems plan update outlining facilities available at area airports. 'THE FEDERAL Aviation Agency feels a study needs to be done and funding would be available," Mr. Crandall said. "We're trying to get a study organized including Weber, Davis, Salt Lake and Utah counties and would even include the eastern portion of Tooele County and possibly Park City and Heber City." "Salt Lake is approaching the limit for based aircraft," he said. 'They don't have the runway capacity and another full systems instrument landing land-ing capability facility needs to be examined. A consultant could do the study for -$80-$100,000." Meetings have been held with Salt Lake airport air-port and Hill Air Force Base officials netting support, he said. THE STUDY is needed to determine how air travel growth can be accommodated in the area, as stated in a handout outlining the study "Indications are that substantial sub-stantial investments will be necessary at the Salt Lake City International (airport) if it is to accommodate the continuing con-tinuing general aviation growth that has felt. The air space characteristics characteris-tics of the valley (Salt Lake) and of the traffic, and including includ-ing the military traffic at HAFB are to be considered in evaluation of alternatives , additional airport capacj",! ST,hDkI "O'OSAL should be received bv WpdI by Dec. 1 with final of a consultant earmarked). It will date a state airport tC, "badly out of date" m Crandall said, and Will i augmented with other stud conducted by the state other areas. |
