Show KS38 ilSG 038813 By DAVE WIGHAM CLEARFIELD Clearfield closes out their football season here this week when the Falcons host the Roy Royals in the finale for both clubs in Region One action. ROY WILL continue into post season play with a playoff game scheduled for the beginning of next week. The Royals will likely finish fourth in the league which means they draw the unenviable unen-viable task of playing defending defend-ing state champion Skyline in the playoff. However a Roy win, coupled with a Bountiful loss, could put the Royals into third place. Don't bet on it though. The Falcons have been a good team this season. They played everyone, with the possible exception of the Bountiful game in which they simply had one of those nights, and with a few breaks along the way the Falcons could very well be in contention conten-tion for the upcoming tournament. tour-nament. AS OF LATE the Clearfield team has had problems putting put-ting points on the board, their defense has performed well but they have been called upon too much in recent games. Their defense has allowed 92 points, when you consider league leaders Bonneville Bon-neville and Bountiful have given up 91 and 97 points respectively, res-pectively, which sounds like a lot but really isn't- Offensively Offen-sively though the Falcons have only scored 48 points. This is the surprising figure because the Clearfield team has some talented people on offense. Tight end Roger Vincent Vin-cent is as good as any in the league at his position, and running backs Mike Arrant, Doug Hamblin and Timmy Gooch are capable of carrying the football. Quarterback Larry Read has turned into a great scrambler and a definite threat to either run or throw the ball. AS FOR the Royals their big threat has been Freddy Fernandes, for the past three years, as either a running back or a split receiver. Roy was hurt somewhat in injuries in-juries especially when their quarterback Jon Nickerson went out with a shoulder injury, in-jury, but Doug Painter has come on to fill in for him. Another threat for the Royals is in their wide receiver Kevin Christiansen, who has blazing speed and good hands. Clearfield has to contain the running of Fernandes to have a shot at the Royals, but not only that they must be aware of the pass which Steve Beal, Bobby Clark, Jack Mullins and company are very good at. THE FALCONS played a great game last week against the Lakers of Bonneville, in fact they won in every department except the score, and could very well knock off the Royals. Big question will be the mental condition of the Falcons Fal-cons knowing this is their last game; they have some seniors with a lot of pride who'll want to beat the Roy club. Look for some juniors to get some time also. |
