A question and answer period will follow. DR. BENDER said about 300,000 new strokes occur each year in the United States. About 1.8 million living liv-ing Americans have su fered strokes, and from 160 to 200 strokes occur per 100 000 population per year. This means that about 160 to 200 strokes per year take place in the Ogden area. About half the stroke vic tims are still anve after six months and ten percent are still alive after ten years, so patients and their families must deal with long-term disability, Dr. Bender explained. ABOUT 35 percent have minor neurologic defects and recover with little disability, but 55 percent suffer major disability with most of them needing professional rehabilitation assistance. About 40 percent of the admissions ad-missions to the McKay-Dee Rehabilitation Center are for stroke, about 80 patients per year, and 85 percent of them will be discharged to their own homes or families. |
