Show Edison's Battery Succeeds. A test was made. recently with, nppar-ront nppar-ront success of the" new Edison storago battery, fitted In a street car on the Orange Or-ange Vallcv ts Passaic Electric railway at West Orange, N J. The test was made under the auspices of the public service corporation. On leaving the Edison yards, the car proceeded down Lakeside avenuo to Washington street and then followed the short line of the Orange Valley In a circle cir-cle of three-quarters of a mile, taking the ten-foot grade at Washington street and Valley road with ease. At no time was difficulty experienced In starting, slowing down, applying brakes, or accelerating accel-erating speed. The car. which was specially constructed construct-ed for the new batteries, is twenty-four feet long and carried thirty passengers. One-half the weight of an ordinary car the same size, it rides on a single truck and is propelled by a straight drive. It Is equipped with 210 cells, arranged under un-der the scats on both sides. Of these cells. 200 are for propulsion and ton for lighting, with a total forco of 50-horso-power. Another test will soon take place on West street, Manhattan, and after that Mr. Edison Intends to run the car to Philadelphia. Ho estimates that the cost of driving the now car will bo 1 cent a mile. If the test satisfies the experts, the problem of cables and overhead wires will probably be solved for city traction companies, as the new car generates its own power. |
