Show OPPOSED TO FREE SILVER United MineWorkers Convention Tables a Resolution Indianapolis Jan 20The convention of the United MineWorkers of America today voted down two important resolutions reso-lutions The first one provided that hereafter all national conventions beheld be-held In mining towns The second was one sympathizing with the Boers of South Africa A free silver resolution was tabled A resolution favoring the weekly payment of wages was voted t1ov n A resolution authorizing the national board of officers to push bills In Legislatures Legis-latures and Congress and providing that copies of the Congressional Record shall be distributed among local unions caused hot debate It was sent to the committee to prepare a substitute The resolution providing that all United Uni-ted MineWorkers be compelled to buy only unionmade goods when they arc obtainable and providing that a fine of Si for the first violation 55 for the second sec-ond and 510 for the third offense be collected col-lected caused a warm debate The spirit of the resolution was accepted but the part relating to fines was tabled ta-bled At 1130 the convention met In executive execu-tive session Chairman Ryan of the scale committee filed his report and the scale proposition was debated Ohio miners have demanded an Increase oC 20 cents per ton West Virginia 15 cents Illinois 15 cents Pennsylvania 15 cents Indiana 15 cents and 20 cents John Mitchell denied officially today the report that he Is a candidate for the position now hold by exPresident M D Ratchford on the National Industrial Indus-trial commission |
