Official Statement Regarding it Issued Is-sued by Director MerrIam Washington Jan 204tmi official statement has been Issued by the census cen-sus office with reference to the industrial indus-trial census It Is as follows The census net provides that the statistics of manufactures may ho collected col-lected J by enumerators or by special agents at the discretion of the director He may designate certain cities towns I or other manufacturing centers in which the manufacturing shall be withheld with-held from the I enumerators and placed in the hands of special agents u A list of such cities and towns has boon prepared numbering In the aggregate aggre-gate over 1000 and a careful estimate shows that nil of the manufacturing establishments included In the localities locali-ties to be withdrawn from the enumerators enumera-tors can be visited and returns from them secured within the brief space ot thirty days by the employment of 2000 special agents who Will be paid by the day The compensation which It Is proposed pro-posed to allow them Is 4 per day except ex-cept in special cases but it can In no Instance exceed C In the collection of manufacturing statistics the director proposes to utilize uti-lize as far as possible the organization created for the general enumeration by placing the supervisor of census of the proper district In charge by grouping the localities withdrawn and by employing em-ploying the best of the enumerators for an additional month aa special agents I
