Show 1OANFORSCOOLS I Proposition Defeated by an Overwhelming Vote TERM WILL BE CUT SHORT Out of 1760 Votes Cost 1410 of the Number were Against the Proposed loon AntiVnccinntionlsts aro Supposed to Have Contributed tho Largest Number of Negative Votes and a Few Probably Feared Increased In-creased Taxation Would Result Many Remained Away from Polls By a vote a fraction In excess of four to one the proposition for the Board of Education to borrow 520000 In order to keep the schools open for a month longer than the present state of the boards finances will admit of was defeated de-feated by the taxpayers yesterday The result is not a surprise except In so far as the overwhelming vote against the proposition Is concerned as It has been evident for some days past that the negative vote would bo the stronger The total vote cast was 17GO of which 1410 voted against the proposed loan The members of the Board of Education Edu-cation attribute the defeat of the pro prosltlon to a number of causes They are of the opinion first that the anti vacclnatiojilsts say an opportunity lo play even with the board and took advantage of 1L They arc also of the opinion that many votes for the proposition propo-sition were lost through the fact that the schools having been closed recently the children did not have an opportunity opportu-nity to explain the matter to their parents par-ents as they would have been Instructed Instruct-ed to do had the schools been open There are also a few people whom It Is believed were moved to cast a negative nega-tive vote through a fear of Increased taxation next year Apathy on the part of those who favored the proposition proposi-tion ia also thought to have been largely large-ly responsible for the result The vote bv precincts for and against I the proposition was as follows Precinct For Against First 105 SOO Second 73 2S1 Third JO 31 Fourth 5C 212 Fifth 70 1TG Totals S50 LHO |
