Show I 1AMMANY TOOK A HAND i REPUBLICANS SPRING A SURPRISE SUR-PRISE I Confidential Adviser of Croker Summoned Sum-moned Before Contest Board to Testify Tes-tify as to Aid Furnished Goebel Frankfort ICy Jan 20Gov Taylor In defending the contest for the gubernatorial guber-natorial chair brought against him by William Goebel has through his attorneys at-torneys spread a large dragnet In gathering I gath-ering his evidence and it I is expected 1 that before the contest is ended some I sensational evidence will be brought I before the contesting Democrats The Republicans have decided to bring Into I the fight no less a factor than Tammany Tam-many hall and have already summoned as a witness one of the confidential advisers ad-visers of Richard Croker I The object of bringing witnesses from New York will be to prove that Richard Croker as the executive head of Tammany j Tam-many Hal was In league with William I Goebel the contestant In the present hearing to carry the State for the Democratic nominee I The attempt will be made by the Republicans Re-publicans to show that at least two of the leading Democratic politicians of this State visited Mr Richard Croker in behalf of William Goebel I and that they secured from him as the official head of Tammany Hall substantial aid In on the Democratic carrying Democratc cam I paign J I has already been charged by Gov Taylor In his counterclaim filed with the hoard of contest yesterday that Mr Goebel together with the chairman of the Democratic State committee and others entered Into a combine with Richard Croker of New York John R McLean of Ohio the Standard Oil company com-pany and other persons and corporations corpora-tions to debauch and corrupt the voters of the State and that for this purpose pur-pose said persons and corporations contributed con-tributed large sums of money with which many voters were induced or bought to remain and did reinaln away from the polls Other and similar uses of funds are alleged in the counter notice The Republican attorneys refused absolutely ab-solutely to talk about the matter Ex Gov Bradley admitted that William Clarke had been summoned but declined de-clined to say anything about what they expected to prove by him William Clarke is recognized as the confidante here of Mr Croker The Republicans put on the stand during the day eight witnesses Their testimony was confined largely to the situation in LoulsUlle and brought out nothing new Mr Clarke who has arrived In Frankfort Frank-fort said tonight that there MOS no truth In the report that he was the confidential man of Mr Crokcr He was a newspaper man he said and was here on newspaper business Pressed for Journalistic particulars Mr Clarke named a New York evening paper for which he declared his sole object In Frankfort was to send them some mail stuff Yes he admitted they sprung a subpoena on mo when I got here but I convinced them I did not know anything about Tammany Hal and they withdrew 1L |
