| Show I CUBAN COLLECTOR SHOT I Details of Killing of James W Smith by Cuban Editor rotary Melklopohn of tho War department received today from Col T H Bliss of the commissary com-missary department in charge of the custom service in Cubn a report on the case of Collector James W Smith at Glbara who was shot on the Oth inst by a Cuban named Cannidatj editor of the Las Clarides a newspaper published at Glbara and who died last night Col Bliss says that on the 10th inst hereceived a telegram from Collector Col-lector Smith giving an account of his trouble with the Cuban editor In tho following words Was shot in the left thigh yesterday afternoon by editor of local paper in an encounter resulting from personal insults and lies published by him In regard re-gard to the management of the customhouse custom-house I was unarmed at the time and disarmed him after being shot Was J operated on and doctor thinks I will be able to return to my duties In about three weeks meanwhile the Interpreter is managing the affairs of the customhouse custom-house In his telegram to the War department depart-ment announcing the death of Smith which is dated Havana January 20th Col Bliss said that Smiths leg was amputated January ISth and he died the following evening Smith served In the Spanish war as Second Lieutenant I of the Second United States volunteer Infantry He resided in New Orleans |
