BROWn CHARGED WITH RAPE i Barber Held Under 5000 Bail and Girls Detained as Witnesses The formidable charge of rape has been preferred by the police against James Brown the barber who was caught with two young girls In his j bedroom behind the fivecent barbershop barber-shop on West First South street late Friday night The fellow asked yesterday that a bond be fixed The request was granted grant-ed and Brown began to realize the seriousness seri-ousness of his offense when the desk sergeant placed the ball at 5000 The two girls Elizabeth Chapman and Clara Nelson aged 17 and 15 years respectively are being held as witnesses wit-nesses under SoOO bonds They spent tearful day yesterday in Chief Hiltons office During the afternoon after-noon the mothers of both girls paid them a visit and upon meeting their wayward daughters an affecting scene look place The Chapman girl said yesterday that she had been engaged lo marry Brown and that she had planned Friday nights occurrence In order to test his character The young girls both say that they will testify against the barber and the police say that the Nelson girl will ten thy that her ruin was actually effected before the officers got into the room The news of Browns arrest caused much indignation against him in that section of the city where his shop Is located and business at the shop of which Brown was proprietor Is said to have suffered a boycott yesterday Brown was unable to furnish the 5 000 ball asked for and he still languishes In the city jail awaiting his arraignment arraign-ment before Judge Tlmmony which has been set for 10 a m tomorrow
