Show JOSEPH S GILES ARRESTED I OLDTI3IE UTAH CHARGED WITH FORGERY Alleged that He Unlawfully Put tho Name of Receiver George A Smith to Entry Fee Receipt Deputy United States Marshal L II Smyth returned last evening from Fillmore Fill-more where he accomplished the arrest I S of Joseph S Gilds who was Indicted for forgery by tho Federal grand jury r at the present term The crime wan J I 1 committed it is alleged about a year I and a half ago and consisted In the forgery of the name of George A Smith I Receiver of the Salt Lake Land office to a receipt for 1225 entry fees for George Bishop of Mlllard county on lots 3 and 4 and the south half of northwest I l I quarter of section 3 township 15 south range 10 west the check bearing date of July 1 1898 At the tlmo of the offense Giles won Unter States Commissioner at Fill more When the forgery was discovered discov-ered by Mr Bishop Giles at once left home and did not return until within the present week A warrant was Issued Is-sued for his arrest at the time and his olllcc was declared vacant When arrested ar-rested Giles at once obtained bonds In I the amount of 1000 among his old neighbors expressed his willingness to come before the court when wanted and pleaded guilty saying it was the one I mistake of his life lCe Giles is 67 years of age has lived In Millard county since 1851 and has been one of the most prominent and influential influen-tial men as Mr Smyth says he seems community to have been the oracle for the entire He has held nearly every position that the county could give him but offers of-fers no explanation for this one act |
