Show A FREE OR A CONTROLLED VOTE? Wo are surprised to find that the Boiso Capital-News considers that The Tribune has been making certain "admissions" "ad-missions" in favor of tho Democratic bolters, nnd their contemplated union with the Mormon voto in Idaho. But The Tribune has been making no admissions admis-sions whatever; it has merely been indulging in-dulging in some speculations as to what the Mormon hierarchy may perhaps do to encournge tho Democratic bolters in Idaho, and try to convince the Democrats Demo-crats of that Stale that their real, interest in-terest lies in submitting to priestly dictation dic-tation in politics, rather than opposing it; in the submersion of the State Constitution Con-stitution rather than in the vindication of it. The Tribune has merely specu lated as to what the hierarch' is likely to do in Idaho, forming its speculations on this point on tho lines of what that same hierarchj- has actually done from time to time in Utah. It is merely a question of possibilities to achieve certain cer-tain results supposed to be favorablo to tho domination of the Mormon priesthood in politics and civil affairs in Idaho as in Utah. To speak of these as "admissions," and to say that Tho Tribuno has "admitted" so and so, shows either an ignorance of the proper use of words or a dishonest effort to twist their meaning. There is a further matter in tho samo editorial in tho Boiso Capital News which is worth some attention. And that is where that paper asks what difference dif-ference it makes to Bryan whether he gets votes by reason of the "counsel" (which means dictation) of tho hierarchy hie-rarchy to their , controlled vote, or the free vote of the independent, self-reliant citizen. The Capital News in its contention seems to consider that it makes no difference whether a freo or controlled vote is cast. But right there is the nub of the whole question; as Pr&idcnt Joseph F. Smith would sny, "tho kernel in the nut,'.' A free and uncontollcd voto by American electors is the pride of our country, the glory of our .institution's. A. fettered voto, a vote that is controlled by a set of eccle- siasts, claiming to speak in the namo of Almighty God, a vote that is at tho disposal of somebody else, is a contemptible con-temptible fraud, a travesty upon American Amer-ican institutions, and a shamo Lo any community wherein the dictation is tolerated. tol-erated. Tho statomcnt of tho Capital News that as botween a frco voto and a servile, controlled, dictated vote, that "it probably will make no difference to Bryan and Alexander, just sd they get the votes," is a political immorality of tho densest, most vicious, and despicable de-spicable sort. If, in fact, it makes no dilVercnco whothcr in this country a "free voto is cast by independent electors, elec-tors, or whether a few persons control by absolute dictation and tho terror of hell fire the ballots of tens of thousands of voters, then indeed is freedom a vain show; that is such a shocking, depraved idea that it is a marvel to sco oven the church-controlled press sink to such depths as to say that it will mako no differenco to Bryan whothcr ho gets the one sort of votes or tho other. Wo havo" never seen anything in American politics so wholly immoral, so rock-lossl- dislo3al to the whole American idea of govorumont, as this expression in tho Boiso Capital News, and wo cannot can-not belicvo for one moment that any Huch sentiment as this can possibly pervade per-vade any groat number of porsons in tho Stat of Idaho. Surely wo hope not. For a Stato in which tliis opinion j would bo gonoral and settled would bo sunk hopelessly in tho mire of fraud and corrnptiou, a helpless pre' to tho usurping ccclesiasls, and a black blot upon tho fair escutcheon of tho American Ameri-can Union, |
