Show ORGxVNIZING THE CAMPAIGN. Tho Tribuno is glad to sec that the American party workers arc bocoming alivo to tho importance of a thorough and efficient organization for next November's No-vember's election. It is good to seo that tho local managers recognize tho importance im-portance of beginning early, so that tho most effectivo work may be done. So far as the National election is concerned, con-cerned, tho American party voters will take caro of that in their own way, nnd will need to liavo no particular concern con-cern about that locally. It is presumed that tho National party managers on each sido will dosire an arrangement of - tickets so that tho American party voters can vote for the Democratic electors elec-tors or tho Republican olectors. as the caso may be, and at the same time vote tor tho candidates of their local ticket. But; whether this is done or not, the paramount fact remains that the election elec-tion of chief importance to us here is our local election, that in this judicial district, and in this county. First of all, there must bo a thoT-ongh thoT-ongh registration of tho voters. At tho recent bond election it was found that tho registration lists wero sadly deficient. de-ficient. Well-known citizens, taxpaj'crs of long residence, found that thej- could not vote bocauso their names wero not on tho registration lists. It will be necessary nec-essary to soo that this is corrected, that the lists aro perfeotcd. and that all who are legally ontitlcd to voto havo the opportunity to enjoy that prtvilogo by getting their names on the registration lists. Another thing in connection with that bond election could bo mentioned, and that was the partisan bluff of tho opposition in undertaking to overawe the friends of tho bonds by anriointing a crowd of deputy sheriffs, whose presence pres-ence at ihc polls was supposed io act as an encouragement to those who opposed op-posed the bonds, and as an intimidation intimida-tion to those who favored them. There was not tho least . excuse in the world for ihc presence of those deputy sheriffs sher-iffs at the polls. There was no breach of the peace threatened, there was nothing noth-ing in the way of illegal voting, cither possible or reasonable to suppose, that would call for any such exhibition of intimidation from tho sheriff's office. It was a gratuitous piece of impertinence and shnm, a costly play to tho galleries, for which there was not the least reason rea-son or justification. If there is an' possibly way to slop the public pay of those deputies and compel tho sheriff to meet their claims out of his own pocket, that should bo done; because the intrusion of these officials of-ficials was a wholly unwarranted pieco of party malignity nnd impudence. It is an outrage to compel tho public to pay for such a piece of partisan malice as that, wholly useless and uncalled for. There was not tho thorough organization organiza-tion at tho bond election that there ought to havo been on the part of tho friends of' the bonds, but there was the nucleus of an organization which did splendid work in behalf of tho bonds and of the city. Tho lesson taught by that organization and tho work it effected ef-fected must bo held to bo instructive in showing the necessity of pushing forward the organization for tho campaign cam-paign that is about to begin. It is organization or-ganization that tells; strenuous, effective effect-ive work that wins political victories. And since the American part' is determined deter-mined to win tho election in this county coun-ty and in this judicial district this yoar. and to make a splendid showing hroughout the State, The Tribune commends" com-mends" the vigorous work alread done, and urges that it be extended, solidified, and pushed to the utmost effective degree de-gree in tho interests of law, order, and progress. And we rest secure in perfect confidenco that this will be done. |
