Two men, namely, Frank J. Ileudershot, Jr., and Samuel C. D3re, will contest the " clerkship. For Recorder. J. H. Wallace ! is likely to havo no opposition. For ; Counts Attorney, David Jensen has the i pole, with Georgo II. Davis a close second, while .Tudgo McCraoken is ' lingering near the post. ! There are ten candidates for legisla- tive honors in Weber county. The Sena- torial bee is buzzing in the bonnets of ex-Senator Charles R. Hollingsworth and of ex-Senator Rudolph Kuchlcn I Bishop E. W. Wade also seeks this nomination. Then there are would-be ! legislators galore. Weber county is cu-; cu-; titled to four and the opportunity of i making laws in the lower house is ap-; ap-; parenth' attractive to many. Those who have announced themselves to date are George A. Graves, tho ox-fire chief; H. B. Randall, George Fuller of Eden, E, G. iVfcGriff of North Ogden. Thomas England of Plain City. Dr. J. M. Elliott of ITarrisvillc, N. P. Matthews of Pleasant Pleas-ant View, and Thomas N. Jones, Jr., of Hooper. "Word comes from Salt Lake that the Republicans of Logan have a candidate candi-date for the office of Governor,"' says the Eureka Reporter. "If this is true the situation will be somewhat some-what clouded for Congressman Howell, who hails from the same county. The combination which was supposed lo havo been formed between Spry and Howell, if it ever existed, has met a serious setback. There is apparently an organized opposition to Howell, not only in Salt Luke, but in his home county as well, and this is helping those who are boostiug for the nomination nomi-nation of P. P. Christ ensen. In the meantime Mr. Christenseu is progressing progress-ing with the work of organizing his forces, and it seems ihat every breeze is filling his sails. Mr. Christenseu is so well, known iu the outside couutics . that he is almost sure to land the nomination." nomi-nation." This is the way the Park City Record Rec-ord sizes up the political situation in so far as the church Republicans are concerned.. Says the Record; There Is a. cloud on the horizon as far as tho Ttepubllcan nomination goes for the of lice of Governor. It was thought aflcv Cutler resigned that Marshal Spry would have the field all to himself. This appears to be not the cuse. ns the friends of cx-IIayor Robinson of Logan have named htm for the place, and he Is developing de-veloping a great amount of strength. This also puts another phase on the battle for the Congressional nomination. It has been thought all along that the programme was to bo a combination between be-tween Spry and Howell. If any such exists, ex-ists, which, by the way, has been denied, tin candidacy of Robinson will have a tendency to disrupt it. Aside from this, and leading the Cache county Mayor out of consideration altogether. Hie fight for the place between ChrJstensen and Howell How-ell in a pretty one. The feeling is growing grow-ing that C'hrlatcnsen can cement the party par-ty and poll its full strength, while Howell not only has a fight on his hands in his home county, but has orgnnized opposition opposi-tion in other counties of the State, and In Salt T.ake county In particular. For an inside battle, that of the Slate Secretary will nrove an interesting one. C. S". Tlngey the present Incumbent, Is making a canvass through his friends, while State Auditor Edwards is after the place in a manner which means business. One south stato man Is after the Treasurer's office, with tho only thing against him being the fact that he halls from Sanpete county, which is tho homo county of A C. Nelson, and the nomination nomina-tion of the latter to succeed himself as State Superintendent of Schools Ib conceded con-ceded by all So much is this the ease that there is no likelihood of any opposition opposi-tion manifesting Itself. Aside front i Smyth? of Pnnpute. the next two candidates candi-dates for the Treasurership who seem to ! lead arc Myton of Salt Lake and Matteon . of Ogden. Myton is a very strong man ' and Is making a great tight for tho place. For the Supreme 'Court. Chief Justice McCarty is In the field to succeed hlm-i hlm-i aelf. The Judge is attending strictly to ( the work or thf court, leaving his candidature candi-dature to his friends, who all arc working for hhn with a will. Hla opponent Is making an active campolgn. As that opponent is the present Attorney-General, ho has the means of making a verv strong battle. Weber county church Republicans arc almost as modest as are those in .Cache, Suit Lake. Sanpele and Utah counties. The Ogden Journal thus refers re-fers lo the tive aspirants for state office. of-fice. Says the Journal; "Weber county needs no forest reserves I for the protection of political timber, Judging trom this rail's crop, which Is already preparing to put Itself on the market. In a (iliiet way, the Democrat of the county are getting busy, but their slulw ,H ,Vot ,ye.1. ful,y Prewired, and monn-a monn-a whll6 all of the candidates are keening f I,'.V,m' X'.'1 p" W,U t,,e republicans. I heir ajplrants are In Ihujlc-M. Some i of them have been working for many months, and others have Just announced themselves. Some have been pushed over the precipice into the whirlpool of publicity by friends with good intentions and others have literally somersaulted over the dividing line.- between public and private life. Weber county is going lo witness a battle royal among its favored fa-vored sons for nomination for state offices of-fices this year. Five avowed candidates havo thus far made their appearance. Dr. A. S. Condon desires to make the ' race for secretary of state. He feels sure that once he gets the nomination, tho office is assured. Then there is that atlorney-geueralshlp. George Halverson. at present district attorney and ex-conn-ty attorney, has had designs on that Job for somo time, and he wants the nomination nomin-ation badly. Judge J. D. Murphy of the municipal court, is almost as desirous of the nomination as is Mr. Halverson. and Judgo J. IS. Bagley Is in the race as a rather more receptive candidate. David Mattson. county clerk, and ono of the Republican party leaders, feels that ho has earned and learned something during dur-ing his years of service. He wants io be state treasurer and has already procured pro-cured willing workers In the various tlelds of the stale. Salt Lake. It is said, favors Mattson for the nomination, and ho Is following up this advantage with good, hard work In other Ileitis. Now. the State convention has never violated a custom which antedates many decades of giving but one State office- to Weber county. It, therefore, remains 'for aspirants aspir-ants for Slate secretaryship, the attorney-generalship, and the treasurership. to not only leat the Held, but they must regard other .seekers of State offices as opponent s. The attorney-generalship for I many terms has gono to Weber county. |
