Show Yafson's Place On Ticket Sways Washington County To Republican Vote Farnsworth Receives Top Vote, Watson Second; Frei Cinches Ballot Place Returns of the primary election in Washington county pretty well followed predictions. Mayor D. C. Watson, running for Congressman, materially swayed" the local vote to give the county a largely Republican Re-publican vote; which influenced the count for other candidates on that ticket. Burton K. Farnsworth; Farns-worth; candidate for state superintendent super-intendent of schools received the highest vote- in the county with 545' votes chalked up for him. Mayor Watson was next, the county giving him 530 votes, according ac-cording to unofficial tabulation. Newell" R. Frei scored an almost two to one majority over his opponent, op-ponent, George H. Lytle. Watson C&rries County Although Mayor Watson may not have carried elsewhere, he can have- no complaints as to the vote of his own county. Governor Herbert B. Maw, Ferrel H. Adams, David Gourley, Reese M. Reese and Newell R. Frei took the lead on the Democratic ticket, with Adam S. Bennion, D.C.Watson, D.C.Wat-son, J. Bracken Lee and Burton K. Farnsworth getting the high vote on the Republican ticket. Practically unknown in this area, Oscar W. Carlson and George H. 'Crow scarcely got a look in. Crow polling only two votes. The Democratic Dem-ocratic ticket was generally more evenly balanced. Returns were slower coming in than usual, some coming by mail Wednesday noon, so that a complete tabulation was impossible earlier. The unofficial tabulation for the Democratic ticket shows: Stanley N. 'Child, 194; Herbert B. Maw, 467; Ferrel H. Adams, 335; Oliver G. Ellis, 243; J. E. Holmes, 207; Reese M. Reese, 384; E. Allen Bateman, 195; David Gourley, 399; Newell R. Frei, 439; and George H. Lytle, 216. Results as shown on the Rc-publiean Rc-publiean ticket are: Adam S. Bennion, Ben-nion, 503; Oscar W. Carlson, 16; George H. Crow, 2; David J. Wilson. Wil-son. 149; Stephen Abbott, 36; William Wil-liam Peterson, 35; B. H. String-ham String-ham R9' T if Wotcnn ir- T Bracken Lee, 499; Reed E. Vet-terli, Vet-terli, 168; Burton K. Farnsworth, 545; and Kenneth E. Mills, 102. Early Voting Light Voting was light during the early forenoon but people crowded to the polls around closing time. Many ballots were reported invalidated invali-dated in some of the precincts dut to the fact that voters still seem not to realize that at the primary elections they can only vote a strainght party ticket, and that scratching and writing in arc incorrect. Unquestionably many Democrats gave their vote to the Republicans in the interest of Mayor D. C Watson for Congressman. Both Hurricane precincts and some of the smaller precincts gave George H. Lytle their full support, but the four St. George precincts and most of the others gave their heavy vote to Newell It. Frei, which assured him o fa big leai! for two-year commissioner. |
