Show Harvest season Now's a good time to get on with your diet By GAYE DEAMER HORSLEY Founder Deamer's Weight Loss Program What a glorious time of the year. Local gardens are bursting with bountiful horns of plenty. Dieters are eating fruits and vegetables to their hearts content and losing weight in the process. I personally believe that foods should be eaten in abundance during dur-ing their harvest season, even while losing weight. I encourage dieters to eat all they want of tomatoes, toma-toes, torn on the cob, potatoes, ripe summer squash, chard, cabbage cab-bage and you name it vegetables. Now that peaches are ripe the trees all over the county are bending bend-ing with the rich supply of fruit. I encourage dieters to "eat all the peaches they want." Amazingly, they do, and still have good weight loss and never feel deprived. That is really the secret of losing weight. If you are restricted to eating eat-ing prepackaged foods or chicken breasts and green beans, how can you ever really learn to deal with the hundreds of tempting foods all around you. You can't. The minute you go off of those restricted diets, you go crazy and eat everything you can get your little full-caloried ' hands on. It is a nightmare. I see a lot of the dieters who have come off of those 90-hungry diets. One woman had gained six pounds in two days, after having lost 30 pounds on a restricted diet. She came, stood in my door and said, "Help me! Someone told me you could help me." She could not believe be-lieve all the foods she could eat and she lost as much weight eating normally, nor-mally, as she did on a very low-caloried low-caloried diet where she had to practically prac-tically live on dehydrated-prepackaged dehydrated-prepackaged foods. One of the most important diet-: diet-: (ing rules you must remember is that you must eat all day long in order to lose weight. Going without . food just makes you ultimately bigger big-ger than when you started. '.-Another important weight loss rule is, you must be able to eat in ' restaurants, at buffets, at reunions, cookouts, at school, at home, at . play. Some diets only allow you to eat salads with no dressing in restaurants. res-taurants. Shall I let you in on a dieting secret? After all their work and going without, these dieters .will never be able to keep their weight off. Because whether they will admit it or not, they are living for the day they can get off the diet. .Because it's food, here we come! Restaurants lose money if these ' people come to their all you can eat buffets, because they go crazy and eat everything they can get their hands on. While losing weight, you have to be able to eat normally. regardless of the occasion. Dieters can have whatever they want when they eat out. I just teach them some health rules. If they want pizza and hot fudge sundaes they can have pizza and hot fudge sundaes. They also have to suffer the natural consequences of what they have eaten. But to say they are cheating is defeating. Cheating from what? Most people don't go out and have pizza and hot fudge sundaes every night. If they are allowed to have some of these foods along the dieting way they don't go crazy along the dieting way. I encourage dieters to eat normally nor-mally including all the peaches they want during this wonderful -bountiful harvest. Here are some peachy hints I think you will appreciate. appre-ciate. Freeze peaches without a fuzz. Women are so over-busy and overworked over-worked they really do not have the time to spend hours in the kitchen. If you have some freezer space, just wash peaches, put them in a large plastic bag and freeze them whole with the skin on. Don't use fruit fresh, sugar or anything else. When you want a peach, take a frozen peach, run it under a little hot water and the skin practically falls off. Use them in homemade ice cream, diet milkshakes, for fruit cobbler, peach jam, syrup, etc. For fun peach popsicles, insert a metal or plastic fork (metal salad forks work great) in next to the pit of the whole washed peach, don't peel (I am a working mother too, so everything I give you in this column col-umn is quick and easy). Freeze a bag of these whole, washed, un-peeled un-peeled peaches with forks inserted. Take out a peach, run it under a little hot water, the skin will come off easily, and presto, the most natural peach popsicle you have ever slurped. Tomatoes are also frozen just as easily. I am not recommending tomato popsicles, but tomatoes are such a favorite food it might be a great veggie snack. However, just wash tomatoes, put them in a good plastic bag and freeze. When you need some tomatoes for soup, stew, spaghetti sauce, etc. merely take out the desired tomatoes from your freezer, run them under a little lit-tle hot water, the skins fall off and they are ready to use. Freezing tomatoes and peaches can not come easier than this, so if you are starting to go to waste just put the abundance in your peach or tomato freezer bags.
