Show Continue tournament action Bountiful, Viewmont advance in volleyball The third game was a classic, Viewmont coming from 0-3 to take a 13-8 lead on aces by Larsen, Twitchell, Wintle and Michelle Kent, a transfer this year from Taylorsville. Williams used her great athletic ability to slam the Warriors to a 13-13 tie. Larsen served a winner, but the Warriors tied it again. Taylorsville took a 16-15 lead, but Viewmont fought off the match point to tie things at 16-all. Then Twitchell served an ace, and the Warriors returned a serve into the net for the Viewmont win. In a late match, Clearfield beat Bountiful 15-11, 15-8, with Promise Mcintosh and Kim Hill the biggest factors. Harrison,; Wilkinson, Stephanie Reading and Robyn Ludwig played well in that match. Bountiful will play at 3 p.m. this afternoon at Layton High, probably prob-ably against Bear River (other pool play was not completed at press time). If the Braves win, they will play at 6:45 at Layton, or at 5:30 if they lose. Viewmont begins at 4: 15 p.m. at Layton, then will play at either 6:45 or 5:30, depending on results. The tournament will conclude with winners meeting later tonight at Clearfield. The championship match is set for 9:15 p.m. and an ace by Smith. Bountiful followed with a 15-6, 16-14 loss to Taylorsville. Following Follow-ing a weak first game, the Braves rallied from a 14-6 deficit in game two to tie things at 14-all. Wilkinson Wilkin-son and Stacey again led the way, and four straight points off the serve of Andy Harrison tied the game. But Taylorsville used two slams by Natalie Williams, their all-state player, to win the match. Viewmont went three games with Clearfield before bowing out, losing 15-7, 13-15, 15-9. With the games at one apiece, Clearfield pulled to a 12-4 lead before the Vikes rallied. Squire contributed an ace and a kill, and the Falcons hit several balls into the net as Viewmont pulled to within 13-9. But Clearfield won on a mis-hit and a kill by Cathy Kelsey, 15-9. The Vikes upset Taylorsville with a great come-from-behind effort. After the Warriors won the opening game 15-9, Viewmont ran to a 13-5 lead in game two, mainly on Taylorsville mistakes. Wintle did serve an ace during the eight-point eight-point run. Williams used three slams to make it 13-8, but a block by Becky Yeates and a miscue by Taylorsville gave the Vikes a 15-8 win. CLEARFIELD Bountiful and Viewmont will continue play this -afternoon and evening in the Clear-field-Layton Volleyball Invitational. Invita-tional. Both teams began pool play on Tuesday, with Viewmont dropping the Braves in three games and then later upsetting Taylorsville in three games. The Lady Braves played well, but dropped matches to Viewmont, Taylorsville and host Clearfield. The Bountiful-Viewmont match saw the Vikes begin with a 15-9 victory in game one. Senior Shar-wan Shar-wan Smith played outstanding,, serving three aces and picking up points on a block and two kills. The Braves rallied from an 1 1-4 deficit behind the serving of senior Lisa Wilkinson and hits of senior Lori Stacey to make it 11-9. But Trudi Larsen served four points in a row for the win. Game two belonged to the Braves. With Viewmont leading 7-4, 7-4, Bountiful scored four straight points on serves by Wilkinson, ; then seven straight on serves by Kristine Doxey to win going away, ' 15-7. The final game was close all the way, Viewmont taking a 6-1 lead only to see Bountiful tie it at 6-6. 1 But a dink by Gayle Wintle, an ace by Tiffany Twitchell, a kill by Jeni Squire and a slam by Wintle made it 10-6. Blocks by Wilkinson and Holly Huffman eventually tied the game again at 12, but Viewmont won on a mis-hit, a slam by Wintle, ' |
