Show Random checks for uninsured motorists to begin Sept. 10th Random checks for uninsured motorists will begin Sept. 10, in a joint effort by the Motor Vehicle Division, Utah State Tax Commission Commis-sion and the Driver's License Division, Divi-sion, Department of Public Safety. Failure of motorists to respond to the inquiry will result in the suspension sus-pension of their driver's license. This program is in response to a legislative mandate to reduce the number of uninsured motorists on Utah highways. Despite the requirements of Utah law for all motor vehicles to be insured prior to being registered, reg-istered, many Utahns have failed to maintain insurance. It is estimated esti-mated that there are nearly 71,000 uninsured vehicles registered in Utah. The Motor Vehicle Division will randomly select approximately 5,000 Utahns each month through the vehicle registration computer file. These individuals will receive a letter requesting information regarding re-garding their vehicle insurance. The envelope will be stamped in red, "Insurance Audit - Dated Material." If the vehicle owner fails to respond, a second letter will be sent before the driver's license is suspended. Once the vehicle owner responds, re-sponds, the information is sent to the designated insurance company for verification. If the owner does not respond to either letter, approximately three weeks after the second letter, the individual's name is given to the Driver's License Division. The individual's in-dividual's driver's license will be suspended until proof of insurance is provided to the Department of Public Safety. The Utah State Legislature has instructed the Tax Commission and Department of Public Safety to develop this program to reduce the number of uninsured motorists in Utah. The program was introduced last year and has since been redesigned rede-signed to increase the response rate and to reduce the chance of error. |
