Show Health Department asks Bountiful City to close its landfill FARMINGTON Richard Harvey, Director of Environmental Environmen-tal Health for Davis County, said late Wednesday that the Utah State Health Department has sent a letter to Bountiful City, informing them of their desire that the BARD be closed. "Our Department also strongly urges that the BARD be closed," said Mr. Harvey. "Continued operation puts the entire county at extremely high risk." Mr. Haryey explained that federal regulations governing landfill closures will change dramatically dra-matically when they are implemented in March 1988. "The cost to close will increase many magnitudes for landfills still in operation." One major difference will be the requirement of a 30-year monitoring system after the closure, which is not required now. "I understand what Bountiful is trying to do, they want to save money," said Mr. Harvey. He pointed out that recent studies indicate that the average cost per ton deposited at a landfill in the United States in 1984 was $9.30. In 1987 that cost . has increased to $ 1 3 .00 per ton, and it is estimated that cost will be in excess of $20.00 per ton by 1990. "So, the new regulations are a very significant thing," he said. |
