Show Children need S.S. numbers This year, for the first time ever, American taxpayers will need Social So-cial Security numbers for all dependents de-pendents over five years of age. The numbers will be required for each dependent listed on a 1987 tax return. "Lots of people don't realize that this new law went into effect for the 1987 tax year," said David Petersen, H & R Block, Salt Lake City District Manager. "When tax time rolls around, they may be lacking those all-important Social Security numbers for their children." chil-dren." His firm is urging taxpayers to go now to their local Social Security offices and fill out the form needed to obtain a Social Security number for each child. By doing it now, rather than waiting until they file their return next year, taxpayers will enjoy faster service and less stress. "Get those numbers in advance of tax filing time. Keep them in a safe place, with the rest of your tax records," says Mr." Petersen. "That just makes good sense and it will simplify your life, as well." "Because of the confusion arising aris-ing over the new laws," says Petersen, "we are prepared to answer many questions. We don't want taxpayers to have any unpleasant un-pleasant surprises when they come in to file their 1987 tax returns." |
