Show Introducing . . . NORMAN G. BERNDT, affable, af-fable, able president of the Hol-laday Hol-laday Lions Club. A big man with bis ideas. Mr. Rerndt this year heads two of Salt Lake's most active organizations the Holladay Lions and the Orpheus Club. A jeweler by trade, Mr. Berndt has been in the business since the tender age of 13. He was born in Newark, Del., July 15, 1905, the son of Henry and Emma Berndt. His schooling, however, was strictly local: the Oneiqua grade school, West High and the University o( Utah. In 1924 Mr. Berndt went to Germany where for three years he served as an LDS missionary. mission-ary. In 1927 he married the former Grace Emery of Salt Lake. They are the proud parents par-ents of three daughters: Shirley (now Mrs. Lehnhof of San Luis Obispo), Ellen Rae and Susan Kay. Rose Garden a Showplace One of the greatest pleasures Norman Berndt gets out of lite is working in his beautiful rose garden, a Holladay show place during the summer months. He loves it, "Because digging in my rose garden takes my mind off everything." He is especially proud of his "Sports" roses; hali red and half white. All in all, his garden boasts of some 250 species- Running a close second in favorites is his love for hunting and fishing. An avid sportsman sports-man Mr. Berndt has chased as (ar south of the border as Mexico Mexi-co for "the big fish." Last spring he spent ten days down Mexico way deep sea fishing . . . or "gentleman's fishing" as he puts it. He hauled aboard a 15 pound corvina off Guayma.s just to prove he knew how it .should lie done. This year he got his deer and elk. He says he likes to change his hunting haunts, but for mountain fishing, he'il lake the country up around Jackson Hole anytime. Active Chnrrh Worker A man active and interested in his religious life, Mr. Berndt has served his church in many capacities since his missionary |
