Show Davis drops Bruins to earn state tourney slot By TOM HARALDSEN Sports Editor WOODS CROSS Davis High advanced into last night's first round of the state 4-A girls' basketball basket-ball tournament with a thrilling 43-41 43-41 victory over Mountain View Thursday night at Woods Cross High. The Lady Darts were set to meet Clearfield in round one after our press time Tuesday. Woods Cross is also in the lower bracket, and met Roy in a game late Tuesday afternoon. Davis faced a formidable task in the Lady Bruins, and indeed Mountain View started fast, taking a 6-0 lead out of the blocks. But Davis' Heather Peel, having perhaps her finest game of the year, kept the Darts alive with eight first quarter points, including a steal and subsequent layin as the period wound down to give Davis a 12-11 lead after one quarter. Mountain View got itself in foul trouble early, and only the play of Melanie Francis, who scored eight of the Bruins' 10 second quarter points, kept them alive. Francis scored just before the half, and Mountain View led 29-19 at intermission. inter-mission. It remained a tight contest in the third quarter, with Mountain View leading by as many as four points, but holding just a 29-27 lead after three as Jaylynn Jorgensen scored for Davis in the final seconds. Sharla Cook tied things for Davis at 29-all in the opening minute of the fourth. Mountain View regained re-gained a 35-30 lead with 5:20 to go, but Peel answered with a three-point three-point basket, two free throws and another basket to give Davis a 37-35 37-35 lead. Jorgensen added a free throw, Peel another freebie, and then Whitney Nelson hit two key free throws to give Davis a 41-35 lead with 1:40 left. Jennifer Schlappi scored for Mountain View, and then Stephanie Stepha-nie Henry scored with 21 seconds left to make it 41-39. Both teams missed several chances to score from the free throw line down the stretch, but with 18 seconds left, Peel made two more free throws, and a basket by Kim Snarr with seven seconds left wasn't enough. Peel had 23 points, including 10 of 17 from the free throw line and one three-pointer. Jorgensen had six for Davis. Francis led Mountain View with 10 points, Snarr had eight and Jodi Burnett seven. Davis will either play Thursday at 2:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m., the early game should it lose to Clearfield; while Woods Cross, which met Roy at 4:10 p.m., will play Thursday Thurs-day at 4:10 p.m. if it lost or at 8:10 p.m. if it won.
