Show r-Icsl studMts i tdp7 in county literacy essay contest By TOM HARALDSEN BOUNTIFUL Three Bountiful Bounti-ful area students were top winners in the Davis County Essay Contest sponsored by Sylvan Learning Center of Bountiful. Winners were announced last week, and will receive re-ceive their awards during a special presentation next Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Sylvan Learning Center, 390 N. Main in Bountiful. Writing on the topic "How My Life Would Be Different if I Couldn't Read," over 180 students submitted essays for the contest. Staff of Sylvan Learning Center performed the preliminary judging, after which the final essays were evaluated by a panel of three judges: Barbara Butler, former English En-glish teacher at Viewmont High School; Robert Tippetts, director of facilitated division at Shipley and Associates; and Clipper sports editor Tom Haraldsen. First place winners were Mina Houshmand, 10, daughter of Mory and Holly Herron, Bountiful, a fifth grader at Washington Elementary; Elemen-tary; in the 5-10 age category; Julie Bradford, ll, daughter of Richard and Karen Bradford of Bountiful, a fifth grader at Washington Elementary, Elemen-tary, in the H-14 category; and Elizabeth Eli-zabeth Harmer, 17, daughter of John and Carolyn Harmer, a senior at Woods Cross High School, in the 15-18 category. The essays were judged on a 1-10 point scale in five categories: following fol-lowing directions, mechanics, legibility legi-bility and neatness, imagination and creativity, and development of idea. Other winners in the 5-10 group were Elizabeth Mann, 10, daughter of Scott and Carol Mann of Bountiful, Bounti-ful, a fifth grader at Washington Elementary, second place; and her classmate, Katie Burningham, 10, daughter of Blane and Joyce Burningham Burn-ingham of Bountiful. In the 11-14 category, second place went to Jenni Bell, 14, daughter daugh-ter of David and Mary Bell of Farmington, a ninth grader at Farmington Junior High. Third place winner was Adam Margetts, 12, son of Bert and Linda Margetts of Farmington, a seventh grader at Farmington Junior High. And in the 15-18 category, second place went to Regan Thack-er, Thack-er, 15, son of F. Weldon and Chad-ley Chad-ley Ann Thacker, Bountiful, a ninth grader at Mueller Park Junior High. Third place winner was Donalyn Hunt, 17, daughter of Clyde and Delora Hunt of St. George, a senior at Dixie High School. Prizes included a Pictionary Junior game and Nintendo video game for the 5-10 winner, a Winning Win-ning Words game and stereo for the 11-14 winner; and a Quest for the Philosopher's Stone game and a television set for the 15-18 winner. Sponsors for the contest were Shipley Associates, K-Mart of Woods Cross, Fred Meyer and Sylvan Syl-van Learning Center. The contest is part of Project Literacy-Utah, a statewide public awareness campaign. cam-paign. Local winners were then entered en-tered in the statewide competition, where winners were to be named late Tuesday after press deadline. On March 26, the state winner-and winner-and their parents will be guests 1 the Utah Jazz for a VIP dinner aV the game. The winning students will be honored at halftime, and state winners will compete in a national na-tional contest for a grand prize trip to Washington, D.C. The winning essays will be published pub-lished in the March 9 issue of the Davis County Clipper. |
