BOUNTIFUL -- More than 6,000 trapshooters and spectators specta-tors are expected to converge on the Bountiful Lions Club Rifle Range Nov. 20-21 for the Lions' annual Turkey Shoot,, one of the largest events of its kind in Utah. LIONS CLUB officials say they will have the range open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. The range is located just north of the " B " on the hillside east of the city. Bob McKenzie, chairman of this year's turkey shoot, said more than 1,000 turkeys and $2,000 in prizes, including a .30-06, a 12 gauge shotgun and a color television set, will be given away during the two-day two-day event. PROCEEDS from the Turkey Tur-key Shoot will eo to suddoiI said the event has been held for more than 35 years in Bountiful Bounti-ful "in rain storms, snow and hail." LAST YEAR the Lions Club held its most successful Turkey Tur-key Shoot on record, holding more than 550 separate trap shooting contests among five or more shooters. In addition, the Lions, along with members of the Lakeview Rifle and Pistol Association, held black powder rifle and pistol shooting events, timed pistol contests aimed at hitting balloons and stopping a clock and splatterboard contests. MCKENZIE said the black powder and pistol shoots are being planned again this year. "The splatterboard contests are some of the most popular events of our Turkey Shoot," McKenzie explained. "It's not really a contest it's just luck." HE SAID a round board with a paper target on it -- divided into pie shapes -- is spun on a nail driven through a post. "A shooter fires once at the spinning spin-ning splatterboard with a 12 gauge shotgun and we count the pellets in each pie. "The pie with the most holes in it wins. There are names on each pie shape and whoever's name is on the winning win-ning pie gets a turkey," McKenzie said. "THE BEST way to get to the Lions Club Range is to drive up Fourth North in Bountiful until you get to 13th East and have to turn -- take a left and turn north and follow the road up the mountain. The range is just north of the "B" and should be plainly marked by signs," McKenzie said. Four trap shooting contests are usually going at one time during the Turkey Shoot weekend, with five contstants in each shoot - or 10 if it is a double affair. After five shots at clay pigeons, the one with the highest score wins a turkey. tur-key. Ties are usually settled after af-ter one or two shots at points father and farther away from the bird. THE BOUNTIFUL Ladies Lions Club, will manage the concession stand inside the Lions Clubhouse during the weekend to raise funds for its charities, according to Sherrie Clayville, club president. Lions Club charities such as programs to help the blind, deaf and needy, Lions scholarships scholar-ships and civic projects. "No matter what kind of weather we have that Saturday and Sunday, we'll hold the shoot," said McKenzie. He |
