Show Rams End Frustrating Year JFor Wildcats By DAVE WIGHAM WOODS CROSS The frustrating football season of the Woods Cross Wildcats came to an abrupt halt last Thursday as the Highland Rams handed them a 9-0 defeat. That loss ended en-ded any hopes the Cats had of entering a state playoff. PRIOR TO the ballgame, all week for that matter, the Cat coaches had been telling their players that they had one shot and one shot only at getting a state playoff. That one lone shot was to beat the Rams , "it doesn't really matter what happens to East or Bountiful if we don't win," is the way one coach summed it up. Indeed as it turned out both the Leopards and Braves lost, but the Wildcats didn't take the Rams so the playoffs were out of the question. ' THIS GAME was just typical of the way the season has gone for these Cats. They played their hearts out but the breaks just don't seem to go their way. A field goal and a long punt return with seconds left in the half were their downfall this week. Other than those two plays the Cats played up to par with the visiting Rams. This loss finished one of the most frustrating 1 seasons that people have witnessed in these parts for some time. All the Cats needed some-i some-i where down the line was a couple of breaks to I go their way but when the breaks came they almost always went away from Woods Cross. IT'S PROBABLY no comfort to the Cats to j know they won the respect of many fans and coaches but it seems like everyone that plays he Cats has good words for them. "They plays "s as well as anyone in the league," noted one Davis coach. "It's hard to think of them as at the bottom of the heap," noted a Viewmont coach. Indeed with the exception of the Viewnont blowout these Cats were in every other region ballgame. They started the year off by blanking a good Bountiful team and things looked on the upswing. But then injuries set in and the Cats ht a streak of bad luck. First the East club dipped through their claws in overtime, then came the Viewmont battle which was lost early ln the game. After a week off from region ac-tlon ac-tlon 'he Cats came back to droi a close game to 'jje region champions from Davis, and finally 'be nail in their coffin was their loss to the Highland team. HIGH SCHOOL coaches always talk about depth and the Cats were hit harder than anyone ese in the region by injuries this season. Big 0l)g Sendobry missed some key games, Kevin Ostler missed a bunch of them. Others t0 miss action were Ken Krouge, Todd Gros-senbach, Gros-senbach, Troy Cullimore to name just a few. To look for a silver lining in this season C0"ld be tough but there is one. With all the '"juries and things the Cats were able to get sme of the younger players some playing time hKh makes the future a little brighter. Guys We Mike Farner, Travis McBeth, Kevin Hlcks, Mike Dalley and Robert Easton be back as the nucellus of next years club. THESE SENIORS played hard and should be cngratulated for giving their fans some great jments to remember. They too have some 0nd memories with the best being their big win 0Ver nval Bountiful. |
