Meanwhile Bountiful coach Mitch Willey informed everyone every-one that only a natural disaster would prevent the Vikings of Viewmont from repeating as region cross country champions. "I WISH THAT were true" noted DuBois "but Davis is very capable of knocking us off' he added. A third of the way through the race it appeared as if the Viewmont coach was going to be right. As the top runners went past him it looked as if there were as many in brown and gold as there were in cardinal and gold. As they crossed the finish line though it soon became clear that the Vikings were going to defend Iheir title. FIRST across the tape was Viewmont senior Brian fuller who ran the fastest time of four regions in winning the individual championship. champion-ship. Brian had expected his toughest competition competi-tion to come from teammate Mike Allen but Mark Wallace of Highland finished in second place with Allen right behind him in third. The first two runners from Davis crossed the tape in fifth and sixth spots with Ken Hirschi in fifth and Del fspinoza in sixth. Junior Reese Kidman Kid-man of Viewmont was next across the finish line in seventh but Brian Bacon of Davis was right behind him and the team title was still up for grabs. Then the Vikes took a slight lead as Mike Nelson placed ninth individually to narrowly edge out Danny Drumiller of Bountiful. These ten runners all qualified for the state meet this Wednesday as individuals. MATT KIMBALL of Davis placed twelfth in the meet with R.J. Lunt of Viewmont in 13th. With R.J. crossing the tape that meant that the five top runners of Viewmont had crossed the tape and had a team score of 33 while the Darts still had one more runner to come home. They didn't wait long as Troy Johnson was next across the finish line to give the Darts a team total of 46 points which was good enough for second place. Highland was third with 81 points, followed by East 82, Bountiful 139 and Woods Cross 157. Other runners for the championship Viewmont View-mont side were Con Fox (19) and Mike Davis (20). For the Darts their other runners were Kenny Robbins (16) and Cary Martinez (25). BESIDES the fine tenth place showing by Drumiller the Braves of Bountiful were represented repre-sented by Chad Harward (24), Brian Heugly (32), Ken Cushing (35), Jeff Quinn (38) Jon Shiner (40) and Paul Rice (41). Woods Cross was represented in the meet by Larry Richardson Richard-son (23), Richard Paul (31), Bill Shuldberg (33), Tim Gordon (34), Tracy Kirkham (36) and Beri Bolton (39). Brian Fuller leads an onslaught of Viewmont runners on the way to a second consecutive region title. All these runners should be congratulated for their efforts this past year in cross country. Understandably Coach DuBois was pleased with his team's showing in defending their title they won last year. "As coaches we voted that this region trophy be a traveling trophy but that if any school won it three years in a row that the trophy would stay at that school" he noted as he awarded the team trophy, "this makes two for Viewmont so watch out next year," he joked. "THE ENTIRE team ran well, we had to in order to beat Davis. But I was especially pleased with the effort of R.J. who placed thirteenth, thir-teenth, that was a big key for us. He just gave everything he had for the team" the coach added, clutching his second region title trophy in as many years. |
