Recent studies indicate many dogs suffer from stress which could undermine un-dermine their health if left unchecked. ilk The causes of stress are many and varied. Leaving your pet alone for long periods is one. Travel in automobiles is another. Confrontations with strange people or other dogs can also cause disturbances. Researchers at the University Univer-sity of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine have found that stress lowers a dog's red blood cell level. Stress also can aggravate problems in behavior, health and aging. The researchers found that a balanced diet based on meat and meat byproducts by-products helped to increase the dog's red blood cell levels and improve tolerance of stress. Good nutrition, regular exercise and attention combined com-bined with an understanding of preventive veterinary medicine can help dog owners own-ers help their dogs deal with stress. A new booklet offers some concrete advice about stress and your dog and how to handle associated problems. |
