Show Vikes Look For State Berth At Highland Dave Wigham liOLN 111 I.I. - I or 'he Vicwmont football Ic.im thi". week's (lime at Highland could be a di cirri tome true, l.ver since these seniors stepped into the hall a Vicwmont they have ill earned about the tune they would be seniors pla;, inii in a stale football tournament. Al l. I HOSE seniors have to do is beat Highland High-land tins 1 nday at 'S.M) p.m. on the Ram field and the Vikes have a state berth locked up. "lioth teams tan look to this game as a big one" noted Mark I'leree the Viewmont head in. in. "lor us the simple fact we can assure our selves ol a state berth and Highland for the fact that they hav e to w in both of their remaining remain-ing league games to get any chance of getting a stale berth. So really this is a big game for both clubs." I'leree sees the Rams as better than their record would indicate. They currently have the distinction of being on the bottom of the region heap with a 0-3 mark. "Highland is a good football team, you simply can't look at their record. They seem to be looking for the right combination and they just haven't found it yet. Hopefully they won't this week" he joked. PART OF the Rams problems have been off the Held and last week the coaches had to take some disciplinary action against some players. As of this writing the status of those players was still uncertain. "Again they have some problems that they are trying to iron out" Fierce added. In their loss to Layton last week the Highland High-land team tried something on offense for the ' fust time, they ran the option. "They moved the ball pr etty well against Layton, in fact they probably had more yards than the Lancers" Fierce noted. : ONE OF THE concerns for the Viewmont coaches about the Rams is the physical size of . Highland. They are bigger than the Vikes and going into this battle the Vikes are not at full strength. Fullback Scott Hubbard will return to action this week after sitting out two weeks with a chin injury. In last week's loss to Olympus Olym-pus both defensive tackles for the Vikes were banged up a little. Lowell Knighton suffered a concussion but will play this week while the status of Brian Bennett, an ankle injury, is still in doubt. If one wanted to compare scores you still really couldn't get a feel for this battle. Viewmont View-mont beat Layton while the Lancers knocked off Highland last week. But on the other hand Highland beat Olympus earlier in the season while the Titans knocked off Viewmont a week ago. IN SUMMING up the Highland team Pierce again showed concern, "The feeling about Highland is that they are just on the verge of putting everything together and playing a great ballgame. They are due to put one together but 1 just hope they don't do it this game" he laughed. "Playing at Highland is always a very tough football game. Our kids aren't looking at this game from any other viewpoint other than with a win they get a state berth. And that's been their goal for three years." ONE OF THE bright spots for the Vikes going into this game is the fact that Steve Capu-to Capu-to rushed for over 100 yards for the first time this season last week against Olympus. With Hubbard back in the lineup the running attack will be more potent and the Vikes have found that tight end Kevin Smith is another fine re-eeiver re-eeiver to go along with Kurt Mathews. As always though games are won or lost up in the trenches and once again the Viking linemen line-men face a big challenge. They have proven in the past that they are capable of playing with big people and they'll have to come up with another big effort against Highland. As for the Rams their big concern is the speed of the Vikings who have shown an ability to score from anywhere on the field. |
