Show Urges Voting Interest cn lira- The citizens of Dav is County Coun-ty have been less than enthusiastic enthu-siastic in past elections to exercise exer-cise their right to vote. It is absolutely necessary that we all vote for the candidate of our choice or we may find ourselves in the same position as citizens of other countries who have lost that franchise to vote for the candidate of their choice. IT IS not only incumbent upon every eligible citizen to vote, but it is also his responsibility responsi-bility to know the candidates and to know what they stand for. A vote just to vote is self-demeaning self-demeaning and demeaning to the candidates who are expending ex-pending vast energy to bring out the issues so there can be an enlightened public. There are several "meet your candidate" meetings scheduled in our area where the private citizen can ask questions and probe the candidates candi-dates inner feelings so his vote can be meaningful. These are a few questions that could be asked of our candidates. JUST OVER ten years ago the elected officials of Davis County purchased land at a reasonable price (approximately (approxi-mately $8,500 per acre) in Bountiful to build a county hospital. Less than three years later it was sold to Hospital Corporation of America for approximately $1,500 per acre, even though the residents resi-dents of Davis County were bonded for $5,000 to build the hospital. It may be interesting to know where the money was spent. As late as the summer of 1982, the county repurchased from the Hospital Corporation of America slightly more than one acre of land to build a mental men-tal health facilitv. The cost for the land was $150,000. The question should be asked is this fiscal responsibility! ANOTHER question. What is the status of the storm drains so badly needed in Davis County? For more years than I can remember the county commissioners com-missioners hav e imposed a mill levy upon the residents to build adequate storm drains. Where are these storm drains for which money has been collected? col-lected? How much is now available through this mill levy to complete the storm drains? What has happened to the Layton Library that was to become be-come part of the county library system? This issue needs to be resolved because it has been an issue that has been side stepped by our elected and appointed officials. How long will it take to bring order from out of chaos? DAVIS COUNTY is the smallest county in the state with a small amount of land for development because of the mountains to the east and the lake to the west. Much of this land could be used for industrial indust-rial development but the Corp of Engineers claim vast acreages as wet lands. What has our county done to bring these lands under county control? con-trol? Even private owners are prevented from developing their own lands. Why has the property taxes of residents inucuM-u .w --maiicullv? --maiicullv? In 1981 more taxes were collected by our count) treasurer than was collected for the combined years ot t9-7- i97Tand 1974. Is there a good explanation for such drastic increase? ANOTHER area of concern is the lack of adequate fairgrounds fair-grounds for Davis. County. Several vears ago land site for a fair ground w as available, nut our elected officials tailed to act It would be interesting to know how much the Lagoon Corporation has been charging the county for the use of their facilitv. What is the Economic Resource Re-source Development doing to bring clean industry into the county? How many businesses busines-ses have been added to the county from their efforts? THE BUDGET process is quite well defined by State Statutes, Sta-tutes, but how many agencies or departments of the county government levy fees that are not reflected in the budget that affect the pocket book of the county residents? These are just a few of the questions I believe need to be addressed by our county candidates. can-didates. I URGE everyone in Davis County to become involved in the elective process. Know your candidates and by all means register to vote and then exercise your constitutional right. Vote! Boyd A. Ivory Bountiful |
