Show College Opportunity Essays Will 'Produce U.B .B.C. -Scholarships Several pertinent matters were the object of discussion at the first 1951 meeting of the officers of-ficers of the Uintah Basin Industrial In-dustrial convention held Saturday, Satur-day, Jan. 27, with Forrest Hancock, Han-cock, president, conducting. Among the matters disposed of was the establishment of several scholarships to Utah colleges and universities and setting up a contest by which students in the schools of the Basin could compete for these scholarships. A total of $155.00 will be awarded during this year. According to Mrs. Virginia Nielsen, publicity director, essay es-say contests will be conducted in all the schools of Uintah and Duchesne counties from the first grade through the twelvth. with only high school students eligible eligi-ble for the $50.00 and $25.00 scholarships. However, a $10.00 prize will be awarded in each of the first eight grades for the top-winning essay on the slogan slo-gan adopted for the '51 U.B.I.C. "The Colorado Rives. Utah's Last Water Hole." In the upper grades, the two district superintendents from Duchesne and Uintah counties will be in charge of the contest, while the primary supervisors will assist them in the elementary elemen-tary division. Finalists will be announced during the celebration celebra-tion that will be held in Roosevelt Roos-evelt next August. A definite schedule of speakers speak-ers and an educational program was approved, and Louis A. Jensen, Duchesne county agricultural agri-cultural agent, was named to head a committee designed to select speakers and to coordinate coordin-ate the educational -program that will feature the affair. Mr. Hancock announced that heads of the various committees will be released shortly and the date of the next meeting set. Officers attending, besides Mr. Hancock were Elmer Yergen-sen, Yergen-sen, vice president; Jack Nielsen, Niel-sen, secretary; Josephine Yer-gensen, Yer-gensen, treasurer, Mrs. Nielsen, reporter; Mr. Jensen, and Ted Phillips, president of the Roosevelt Roos-evelt chapter of the Young Farmers. |
