Show Highlights Told Of Ashfons' European Tour Returning home last Wednesday from a month's European tour were Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Ashton, who report a wonderful time, but state that it's good to be back home. Following is a resume of the highlights of their trip as reported by Mrs. Ashton, which included visits to Spain, Italy, France and England, with stops at Tunis and Algiers, Africa and Shannon, Ireland. "Rome was perhaps the most interesting city we visited. The city is perched on seven hills and is threaded by the Tiber River. Its tumultous and fascinating history is evident by the visits to many ruins some very well intact, such as the Coleseum, where gladiators fought in time of Nero; the Pantheon, Pan-theon, the Catacombs, underground under-ground where early Christians sought refuge, held services, lived, died and buried their dead; the Forum, ancient judicial and civic center. The Forum is the tomb of Julius Caeser. The city is surrounded sur-rounded with an ancient wall with its many gates, much of which still stands. "Other places of interest were Borghese Gallery and the museum, containing world famous marble sculpturing and a collection of paintings by El Greco, Raphael, etc. Trevi Fountain Foro Italico a sports stadium and college built by Mussolini, completely surrounded surround-ed by a large marke statuary athletes- "A visit to the Vatican City with its beautiful St. Peter's Church picture and tapestry galleries was enjoyed. The Pope appeared at the window of his adjoining dwelling dwell-ing and spoke to the throng assembled as-sembled in the square. "Salerno Beach (where the Yanks first landed) Sorrento, and the Isle of Capri were the most picturesque and beautiful of all places visited. "From Capri a trip by motor boat then row boat was made through the Blue Grotto, a large cave in the rock cliff which doesn't quite touch the water the sun trickling through gives the water and whole cave a blue phosphorescent phosphor-escent light, beautiful beyond description. des-cription. "Paris, with its Eifel Tower Arc de Triomphe, Mont Martre (artist colony), Cathedral of Notre Dame, side walk cafes, is alive and interesting, but all the flowers we expected to find in Paris, we found in England. "Beautiful green country sides in England with green fields marked by hedges tulips, Japanese Japan-ese cherries, Hawthorne in bloom everywhere (no weeds or dead undergrowth). London with its Thames River and many bridges is much alive and has made wonderful progress in rebuilding after the awful devastation de-vastation wrought by the bombing bomb-ing in World War II. One has to see the crumpled mass to realize how severe it must have been. Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace (where we saw the changing chang-ing of the guard) the old Tower of London were impressive and interesting. "The people of England were by far the most friendly and helpful help-ful but the weather, cold. "Many old and beautiful castles, museums, churches and parks were visited in Madrid, Spain, Versailles Ver-sailles and Fountain Blue France. Pompeii was another interesting tour. "The streets of Europe are all stone, brick or cobble rock. "The city of Naples seemed to be less progressive in building and sanitation. The city is on the bay of Naples where 15 ships of the U, S. Fleet were anchored. The water is calm and beautiful. They were having boat races which we watched from our hotel room balcony. bal-cony. "The Amalfi Drive skirting the 1000 foot cliffs bordering the blue Mediterranean, with the lemon groves on the other side of the road, growing on terraces clear to the top of the mountain was breath-taking and beautiful. "The trip of 15,000 miles by air, rail and boat was most enjoyable, but it is good- to be back home with family and friends who have our habits and customs." |
