Show Know Your Schools . . . . Parents Speak Their Poinds . . . How do you feel about the job the schools are doing for your children? Are the schools your children are attending teaching them the things you would like them to learn? How would you suggest our schools could be improved? im-proved? Here one parents speaks her mind. This column will from time to time carry the expressions of other parents in various parts of the district. Mrs. Rachel Bates, Duchesne, is the author of this week's article. ar-ticle. Mrs. Bates is the mother of four children. Janet, the young est, is eight years old and this year is in the second grade of the Duchesne Elementary School. The twins, Myrle and Beryle are 8th graders this year and David is a senior in the Duchesne High School. . WHAT I THINK THE SCHOOLS IN DUCHESNE ARE DOING FOR MY CHILDREN By Mrs. Rachel Bates I think our schools in Duchesne have had and still have some of the very finest teachers that there are in any district. I feel that my children have learned all the important im-portant fundamentals necessary, in order to carry on with their future schools, such as reading, writing, etc. Reading, to me is one of the most important fundamentals funda-mentals that a child can learn and unless he does learn it well in the beginning, it will be his greatest drawback throughout all his life. It is important that the parents watch this and see that their child gets extra help when it is needed if he has trouble in this respect. A child that cannot read and read well will suffer because of it, so I am glad that my children have had teachers that have seen to it that they did accomplish this important step. My children have always liked their teachers, which I thing is a compliment to any school. When children report that they like the teachers they cannot can-not have any very serious problems, prob-lems, that can't be ironed out. The teachers they have had, I believe and so do they, have been successful in teaching them cooperation co-operation with other ' children. (Continued On Back Page) Know Schools. . . (Continued from Page 1) Parents can teach this in the home when the child is small, but until the schooling starts, they have very little experience in cooperation coopera-tion with large groups of children. chil-dren. Teachers can also accomplish accom-plish more with children in this respect than even the parents, i as they will listen to the teachers teach-ers advice sometimes more readily read-ily than they will the parents, for some reason. Teachers can help the child value work, and learn how to work well, more so I than they can. I don't believe that 1 any of these things should be left up to the teacher entirely, as the parents should see to it j that the child learns the first steps to these fundamentals be- fore he even enters school, but a teacher can enlarge on what the child has been taught at home, ' and if he is a good teacher, he will see to it that these things are continued as part of the child's education. The same things apply to good manners, respect of other people, etc. The parents' teachings can do little for a child unless these are kept up in our schools as a part of good schooling. school-ing. As far as I can determine, our teachers have been following up on these things, along with the studies. It is important that children learn to work well in' groups, and to learn how to handle responsibility responsi-bility given them. That, too, has been accomplished with our older child, and the younger children and learning it as they go along. They have learned the meaning of democracy and the value of living in the land of the free, and appreciate the opportunities they have in our country, so the schools have helped a lot in this way to aid the children. These things, along with their studies in various classes all go into the well rounded out education educa-tion that our children need, and our school, even though it is not an accredited school, I believe, supplies our children with all the fundamentals that they need in these early grades. Of course we would all like to see our school grow and improve, but I truly believe our children, while in elementary el-ementary and high school, are much better off in a smaller school than if they were in a large school in one of our larger cities. In the future I would like to see our high school become an accredited school, to have more subjects added, to have our new building finished, so our children will have more opportunities in some fields than they do, and I would love to see a swimming pool added to the plans on our new high school.. I think we would make a mistake mis-take not to see if this could be made possible, as it is something i : that would be hard to add on after af-ter the building is finished, and I feel there is a great need of it for our children, as part of the new gym, that will be built in the future. But for now I do feel that our children are getting the important fundamentals that they need, right today,, from our schools as they are. |
