The Cougars drew first blood in the early seconds of play when Packy Fenn was fouled by Terry Anderson, and the Union Captain made both pitches good. His two foul pitches were followed fol-lowed closely by a beautiful one-hander one-hander by Ken Anderton from outside. They tied the game at 4-all 4-all with two foul pitches and a field goal, and that was the last time in the ball game the Utes came closer than 2 points of a classy Union team. Early in the third period Uintah made a scoring scor-ing surge and ran the score to 25-27. And that was the only time the Cougars' lead was challenged. The starting lineup composed of Fenn, Anderton, Rulon Gilbert, Norman Hanson and Larry Ross, functioned almost flawlessly. Fenn's uncanny four shooting, 7 out of 8, and Ken Anderton's accurate ac-curate shooting from the field during the first half, kept the Congars well out in front with the score ending 16-7 at the first quarter, and 23-17 at the half. Anderton scored 10 and Fenn 9 in the first half, and the latter came through with 9 more in the second . half to take high scoring honors with 18. Showed Defensive Power The defensive work of the Cougars Cou-gars during the first half, kept a usually hot Uintah team well tamed they controlled the boards and came through with more than their share of rebounds. The defensive de-fensive work of Rulon Gilbert, 6-2 center, who drew the assign-I assign-I ment of watching Valoy Eaton, was particularly pleasing to all I Union backers and to his coach, i This big boy held the high scoring scor-ing Eaton to a pair of field goals for the first three quarters, until he tired. Of course he had some help from other teammates. Early in the fourth period Snellen Johnson replaced Gilbert, and (Continued on Classified Page) I Basketball .... (Continued from page one) turned in a fine game, scoring 7 points and keeping Eaton pretty well covered. Uintah had 38 foul pitches as compared with 24 for Union and made 18 and the Cougars collected collect-ed 16. The Cougars hit 18 from the field as compared with 11 for the Utes. There were no particular stars in the Cougar lineup and to praise one without every other kid who entered the contest would be an injustice to each one. Each of the nine Union players sent into the contest made a fine contribution con-tribution to the well-earned victory vic-tory that puts the Cougars in the driver's seat Especially gratifying gratify-ing was the way the replacements, Dale Womack, Snellon Johnson, Smiley Denver and Ken Benson, took over where others left off each came through with some timely points, and worked well on defense. Team Well Coached The Cougars functioned like the well coached team they are, each having his job assigned him, and each one came through according ac-cording to instructions. The impressive im-pressive win of the Cougars is a tribute to the players and coaches, and a great thrill to the local fans It was a typical Ute-Cougar Ute-Cougar game filled with school spirit which was entered into by fans from the two communities. A word of praise also is deserving deserv-ing for the officials who worked a mighty tough game they called them as they saw them and are to be complimented for their fairness. In lavishing praise upon the heads of players and coaches from Union is in no way detracting from a mighty fine basketball team that represents Uintah High School. Their center, Valoy Eaton, is one of the finest ball players ever to be developed in the Basin, a fact that is evidenced by being high point man for his team with I 15 points. Such other stars as Ronnie Abegglen, Terry Anderson and Gary Hatch make them still the team to beat for the title they won last year. "B" Team Impressive The baby Cougars, coached by Sarkis Arslanian, gave the early crowd a peek into what is to come, as they very impressively defeated the Papooses from Uintah Uin-tah 35-26. The game was literally literal-ly a run-away for the "B" lads until the final quarter when Coach Arslanian started sending in his subs they led by as many as 18 points at one time, when the score was 30-12. He has some big kids, and some fast ones, and a few that can score. Play At Tabiona Friday night the Cougars, both A and B teams, travel to Tabiona, where they will meet Coach Jim Knight's youngsters in the second round of the Basin league. The Tigers lost a 45-30 game to Duchesne Du-chesne last week at Duchesne, but are always tough on their own floor.
