Show HOUSEWIFE'S OUTLOOK ON U.M.T. Dear Editor: Like other Americans I am deeply concerned over the tremendous tre-mendous sums of money required re-quired for the operation of our armed forces. This year I read we will spend over 74 billion dollars for defense alone, and this does not include the guns, tanks and planes we are sending send-ing to our allies. A great share of this expense, I understand nearly 20 billion dollars, goes to pay allowances of the threa and one-half million servicemen. I realize that we must have a strong defense, but must we maintain such a large regular force? I don't suppose anybody has an idea of how long this period of tension will last. However, How-ever, it does appear that we I could train more men in th reserve and National Guard at home without keeping them in Federal service. Universal Military Training as proposed by the American Legion offers a . sound solution to this problem. Their plan calls for the reduction in our regular wmed forces, as young nven finish their universal military training of four months. This would reduce our present forces by one man for every three trainees assigned to the reserve. By this plan we will still have the strength we need without bankrupting our Nation.
