Show &JtL VlgWPOiEgT kr4S CLIFF MEMMOTT, Editor HARMONY SHOULD PREVAIL ON UTAH'S CAPITOL HILL .... Monday saw the inauguration of Governor J. Bracken Lee, the first Republican governor to serve the people of Utah in' more than two decades, who has begun his second term as the chief executive of the Beehive state. Along1 with the governor , was a full slate1 of officials, all elected last November on the GOP ticket, who were sworn in to fulfill the mandate of the people of this great state. Always a strong advocate of economy in government, and a strong critic of centralizing power in our nation's capltol, or in our state, Governor Lee faces his task with a slate of officials and a legislative majority who are of - the same political affiliation. His task, although rough at best, is comparatively easy considering that four years ago he was the only Republican sworn into office in the inaugural in-augural ceremonies at the capitol, and a legislature that was dominantely Democratic. After studying the introductory panel of elective and appointed officials of our state in a daily paper a few-nights few-nights ago, which included the salaries they will receive for doing their jobs, one wonders why high type men, who are capable of earning several times more than their salaries, would agree to stop into these position. I am hopeful, and have no reason to doubt that every elected official, as well , as those appointed by previous governors, and will be appointed ap-pointed to fill expiring1 terms, have only one desire, and that is to serve their state by contributing of their talents and time in making our state a better place in which to live. There are" many among us who have not, in the past, agreed, with our chief executive, or the party he represents .' . . Many will sit back critically awaiting a flaw that might occur, to give them an opportunity to criticize or condem the governor That's politics in its simplest form, and is to be expected. Regardless of our personal feelings about the men and their politics who are our state and county leaders, as real American citizens who love the great State of Utah and its high ideals and progressive attitudes, it is our duty to earnestly support every movement that is progressive and will lead us forward and upward. . Several months ago I expressed my personal opinion in this column that I thought it was time a change was made in the party that had been running our country for the past twenty years A party that I helped into power . . . That change has been effected, and in a few short days the first; Republican president in twenty years will move into the Whitehouse and a Republican controlled' Congress will get into action . . . It's a healthy move, just as, it is healthy that Utah, and Duchesne county, or Uintah county, or any other county, should have a change occasionally. . . As long as we have a two-party system in operation we " will not fail. ' All Utah joins in an expression of thanks to the public' spirited men who have assumed command of our state government, and word of praise -is due those who have served over the years faithfully and unselfishly. The road ahead is not an easy one, and no man, regardless of how great he might have become, can do the job alone . . . It requires the help of a far greater power than man possesses, to face the magnified problems the futuer will present. Let us all join Governor Lee in the concluding statement he made in his inaugural address last Monday: "Our responsibility is tremendous, but with the aid of God, whose blessing we ask, we shall not fail. Let us humbly pray for the Divine Guidance that inspired our forebearers, , to the end that we may be as worthy .as keepers of our trust as they were in granting us our heritage." v E v A DANGEROUS PRACTICE THAT VIOLATES A STATE TRAFFIC LAW .... The past few days, since the snow came, I have ob- ..-served ..-served a few motor vehicles with sleds attached to the, rear, loaded with small youngsters who were having a ' time of their lives . . . Sure it's fun, if the same thing doesn't happen that I saw happen in a community I was living in a few years ago. - It wag a sad affair for the father who was pulling his . only daughter, a child of about 9 or 10 years, behind the family car, and as they turned a corner, the sled skidded directly into the path of a truck that just happened to be passing. The pretty little girl's body was crushed and mang-" mang-" - led to a lifeless state by the truck's wheels which passed : over her body that was still atop her Christmas sled she had received less than a week before. . Yea, it's a dangerous practice some people occasionally follow, and it's definitely in violation of the motor vehicle act of Utah which reads: 57-7-150 Bicycles, sleds, etc., shall not be attached to other vehicles. No person riding upon any bicycle,. coaster, roller skates, sleds or toy vehicle shall attach the same or himself to any vehicle upon a roadway. (Sec. 73). Local officers should watch for such violations, and warn the guilty persons. Then if they persist, they should be cited into court and receive the full impact of the law the have broken. E v Dad to nine-year-old Junior: "Son, I want to talk to you about the facts of life." Junior: "Shoot, Dad, what is it you want to know?" You can die for your country only once but you can lire for it daily. ... The impression we make on our children goes deeper than our instructions. - ' Wife to husband: "Dear, there's a man from the Eternal Revenue Department here to see you." 30 |
