Show We Learn About Organizations EDITOR'S NOTE Last spring a series of stories about', civic and service organizations started in the Roosevelt Standard Stan-dard under the direction of Mrs. Fran (Ida) Harrison. Several stories appeared, then came the summer vacation and they stopped stop-ped for a few months. . . This week we present a story of the aims and accomplishments of the American Legion Auxiliary. Agenda for the year is as follows: AugusJ Membership: Membership is limited to mothers, wives, sisters and daughters of veterans without prejudice because of race, creed or color. Membership in the local unit has increased almost 100 per cent since it was organized or-ganized in 1929. September Music: Music is the theme for September, Sep-tember, but it is carried as a year-round program. October Civil Defense: This is one of the newest programs pro-grams in which members are instructed in first aid and what to do in case of enemy attack. November Education of Orphans Or-phans of Veterans: December Rehabilitation: Gifts, cash for Christmas party par-ty and tooth brushes are sent to the Veterans Hospital. Due to distance we are unable to assist as-sist with the personal services projects in the Veterans Hospitals. Hos-pitals. Contributions are made to the Lepersarium in Carville, La. We, at all times stand ready to assist needy veterans and their families. January Legislation, National Nation-al Security, Bonds: We write and wire Congress as to our wishes regarding enactment en-actment of bills, especially pertaining per-taining to veterans. We participate parti-cipate in elections and encourage encour-age interest in Legislation. We are instructed in matters of National Na-tional Security and members are encouraged as individuals to do their part. We have conducted con-ducted bond sales. February Americanism: Flags have been presented in cooperation with the American Legion, to the schools. Flag tei-quette tei-quette is learned and taught. Americanism essay and oratorical orator-ical contests are sponsored. Girls' State, where high school girls who are leaders, are taught the functions of local, state and Federal Government, is an Auxiliary program. Meetings Meet-ings all include the advance and salute to the American Flag. March Community Service: Gold Star Mothers projects are engaged in whereby the community is bettered. We have contributed to the building of the hospital, assisted with the Library, the Rose Garden, served ser-ved banquets, helped with the Blood Bank, X-rays units, and assisted in many other community commun-ity projects. Each year tribute is paid to all Gold Star Mothers Moth-ers of the community. April Child Welfare; Pan American Study: Services, Clothing, Food and Medical aid are furnished to needy children of veterans. A study is made of a Pan American Ameri-can country each year. May Poppy: Poppies are made by the veterans vet-erans in the hospitals. They are paid for the poppies they make. They also learn to use crippled hands and arms in making these poppies. The Auxiliary buys the poppies and sells them. Money received from the sale of them goes to the Child Welfare fund. The quota for our unit is 1700, but we usually buy more than the quota. The poppy is the Auxiliary flower and any that are " not sold are used for corsages cor-sages and decorative purposes. The unit also sponsors poppy poster contests, awarding prizes to the winners. June Installation of Officers: Officers are elected in May and installed at a special ceremony cere-mony in June. State convention is held. Meetings are not held in the month of July, but certain cer-tain projects such as Child Welfare Wel-fare carry on as usual. Most projects are carried on the year around, but stressed in certain months. Donations are made to fund drives for Polio. Heart, Red Cross, Cancer and the L.D.S. Crippled Childrens Hospital in Salt Lake City. Memorial services are held in cooperation with the Legion, in local cemeteries where tribute tri-bute is paid to the veterans who have died. Poppy wreaths, which are made by the unit are laid on the graves of veterans. Throughout the year the unit has various types of drives to raise funds for its treasury, as well as banquets, and socials. Space will not permit a complete com-plete report of the many things we do and stand for. The Auxiliary is the largest patriotic organization in the world. |
