Show WX, Viewmont winners as preseason soccer continues By TOM HARALDSEN Sports Editor Woods Cross and Viewmont picked up non-league soccer victories vic-tories Tuesday, while Davis was losing a close game to Layton in an abbreviated week of play. Bounti-ful's Bounti-ful's match with Layton was rescheduled res-cheduled for this afternoon. At Clearfield, the Woods Cross Wildcats took a 6-2 victory over the Falcons in a game they dominated domin-ated offensively. After a quick Falcon Fal-con goal, Woods Cross scored four straight to take a 4-1 halftime lead. John Allred began the scoring, taking a volley down the middle. Tommy Angelos followed minutes , . later with a shot from just inside the six meter box to make it 2-1. Allred tallied again on an almost identical shot down the middle, and then transfer student Jerome Demoulin of France scored on a header to stretch the lead to 4-1. After a Clearfield score five minutes mi-nutes into the second half, Angelos tipped in a rebound of a shot by Dave Simon off the bar to make it 5-2. The final goal came from Angelos on what coach Kevin Rig-by Rig-by called "an honest to goodness bicycle kick," meaning Angelos dropped to a backflip position and booted the ball over his head for a score from 1 1 meters out. Rigby praised Simon for his five assists, and Woods Cross outshot the Falcons 37-10. Brent Heckle and Ryan Arbon split-time in goal wood Tuesday afternoon in its final preseason tuneup of the year. At Layton, the Lancers scored twice in the final 10 minutes to edge Davis 3-2. Davis had built a 2-1 lead at one point, as Brian Kynaston scored both Dart goals. Davis for the 'Cats, who finished preseason presea-son Tuesday afternoon with a contest con-test at Roy. ' Viewmont improved to 4-0-1 on the year, even though Weber ended en-ded the Vikes' string of shutouts by scoring three minutes into the game. The Vikes rallied for a 4-1 victory, as David Lauder scored t wice and both Jeff Smith (penalty) and Casey Layton tallied once. Coach Richard Cook felt "we showed a lot of character by coming com-ing back after falling behind quickly quick-ly like that." He said Weber was playing the game without the services ser-vices of two of its starters, but called cal-led the Warriors "a very physical, and very good club." Viewmont was to visit Cotton- dropped to 1-2 on the year, and will face both Bonneville this afternoon and Box Elder on Friday in Kaysville Kays-ville in its final two tuneups for region re-gion play. Bountiful, 3-1 on the year, will host Layton this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Millcreek Junior High, then finishes preseason with a game at Clearfield Friday night. Region play opens next Tuesday, Tues-day, April 12, with East playing Bountiful at Millcreek and Davis visiting Highland, both at 3:30 p.m., and Woods Cross traveling to Viewmont at 7:30 p.m. Both the Wildcats and Vikes will play all home region games under the lights this season. |
