Show Controversial Art to be discussed at Btfl. Davis Art Center A special presentation to include a film and lecture is slated for Sunday, April 10 at the Bountiful-Davis Art Center, 2175 S. Main, Bountiful, at 4 p.m. There is no charge and the public is v invited to attend. The film, "The Iron Horse," is about a large metal sculpture by artist Abbott Pattison for the University of Georgia campus in the early 1950's. When completed, it triggered a violent reaction and continuing controversy which polarized students and faculty alike. Interweaving interviews with people present at the time with documentary and re-created film footage of the incident, the film attempts to analyze what happened and why. It then extends the meaning of this incident by examining the often unsettling effects of innovative art, and assesses the importance im-portance of art in our culture, investigating how and why it affects us as it does. "Medium Rare" is the title of the lecture to follow, by Dr. Peter Briggs, director of the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art at Utah State University. Briggs will address the film's subject matter in relation to the current exhibit at the BDAC, "The Medium is the Message." This exhibit, on display through May 6, examines the unexpected or non-traditional approach to mark-making through exploratory mediums. Work by 22 contemporary con-temporary Utah artists is included in the exhibition. The Bountiful-Davis Art Center is a public non-profit arts organization serving Davis County and the state. Admission is free to the public. |
