Show Will Support Otis Winn Sew. M$m$erter will wot seekjimrtb term By GARY R. BLODGETT BOUNTIFUL Sen. Jack M. Bangerter announced today that he will not seek re-election to a fourth term as State Senator from south Davis County, he will support Otis Winn. In making the announcement, Sen. Bangerter may have closed but did not lock the door to his political future. "I don't intend to run again, but that doesn't mean that I won't step in the last minute if I feel that there is not a well-qualified Republican candidate to take my place," he said. "There are several good candidates candi-dates who have indicated that they will seek election, and if they do I will not run again." Asked if this announcement is curtailing his aspirations for a future fu-ture political career, Sen. Bangerter Banger-ter replied: "No, I don't think you can say that. It simply means that today I am stepping aside for someone else by not seeking re-election to my senate seat. What will happen next ' week, or next year, is still uncer-, tain." A member of the State Senate for the past 12 years, Sen. Bangerter said he is backing away from politics, poli-tics, at least for the time being, because be-cause of other priority commitments. commit-ments. "I need more time with my family, fami-ly, and my family is my number one concern in life," he said. "Although my children are grown, I have responsibilities to them and to my grandchildren not to men-- men-- tion my lovely wife who has stood by my side for these past 12 years. There are still many things we want to do." Reflecting on his past three terms in the senate, he said he is "quite pleased with his accomplishments." accom-plishments." "I worked hard for the people that I represented and for the good of Utah," he said. "I served diligently dili-gently and stood up for my convictions convic-tions while still trying to be conservative conser-vative in the things I did." Sen. Bangerter served on several sever-al committees of importance to the Utah Senate, to Utah and the western west-ern United States. "It was these regional committees commit-tees that I feel so strongly about," he noted. "These were the committees com-mittees in which state senators from other states met to formulate legislation that would be similar to all states. It's these committees that I will miss the most." Sen. Bangerter emphasized the time away from the capitol is as important and stressful as the time spent in session. "There's a lot to learn and experience is very valuable." valu-able." He said that the time involved in politics has been demanding and his business has suffered. "I must get back to my business and spend more time with my family and my livelihood," the senator said. Then he added: "Everyone should pay allegiance to their country, coun-try, and I believe that I have paid my two bits' worth. It's up to someone else to carry on." |
