In games played prior to the Easter Eas-ter break, Viewmont moved to 5-0 on the year with a 6-2 victory over Hillcrest, Davis split a pair of games, Woods Cross took two from Ben Lomond and Bountiful had impressive wins over Layton and Taylorsvillo. The Braves' win over the defending de-fending state champion Warriors was a classic. Played Tuesday at Bountiful, the contest featured a great pitching performance by Tony Smith, who tossed a nifty four-hitter. Smith went the dis-tance, dis-tance, striking out five batters in a 0 2-1 victory. Coach Phil Olsen praised Ryan Jacobs for a great game, offensively offensive-ly .and defensively, and Bountiful did not commit an error in the win. On Wednesday, the Braves beat Layton 5-4 as Jason Shaw went the distance. Smith and Sharif Hadley both had three hits apiece for Bountiful, which was slated to play either Skyline or Brighton on Monday Mon-day afternoon at Cottonwood High in the finals of the Granite District Tournament. Viewmont earned its fifth win of the year at Hillcrest as Dereck Hope and Paul Garlick scattered four hits in a 6-2 victory. Paul James had a pair of hits and Reed Secrist drove in a run with a shot off the rightfield fence for Viewmont. View-mont. Though pleased with his team's early season performance, coach Wade Bender admitted that "we haven't seen much quality pitching so far." He said that would change when Region Four play begins, with the league having plenty of strong arms. Woods Cross earned a 5-0 victory vic-tory over Ben Lomond Tuesday and then took a 13-5 win over the Scots Thursday. Tuesday's game featured a two-hitter by junior Brian Jensen, who went the distance. dis-tance. Woods Cross got eight hits, and scored on three squeeze plays, one each from Max Turner, Chad Watson and Greg Dyson. On Thursday, Steve Worthen pitched the final five innings of a 13-5 victory, shutting out Ben Lomond while the Wildcats took their fourth win in five tries. Worthen struck out nine in relief for the win. Worthen, Watson, Shawn Culli-more Culli-more and Sean Cosper all had triples tri-ples for Woods Cross, with Worthen Worth-en and Cullimore each driving in a pair of runs. The Wildcats had 13 hits. Davis beat Ogden 7-5 Monday, then dropped a 7-4 decision to Kearns on Tuesday. The Darts were also slated to play Clearfield last week. The Braves were scheduled to play for the championship of the Granite District tournament Monday afternoon. Hulce had two doubles for Davis. In the loss to Kearns, Korth, Mark Sargent and Jeremy Chiles all had a pair of hits for Davis. Woods Cross was set to visit Timpview and Davis host Layton Tuesday, while Bountiful will visit Layton this afternoon. Thursday's schedule finds Clearfield at Bountiful Bounti-ful and Bonneville at Viewmont, both at 3:30 p.m., and Davis will visit Roy Friday at 3:30 p.m. Region action begins next Tuesday, Tues-day, with Highland visiting Davis, Bountiful heading to East and Viewmont at Woods Cross |
