Show Animals Should Not Be Used For Research x's For those of ou in doubt over research being painful, common sense will tell ou that it certainly is. To begin with: one of the most traumatic things you can do to an animal, is put it into a : cage. It's bad enough for a few days, some research will keep r;f; animals caged for years, especially cancer studies. The animals 'i' are isolated, and then treated as tools. They have nothing nor , no-one to relate to. and are shown no concern w hatsoever. W hen "L " they are removed from the cage, they arc hurt. , WHETHER IT involves testing, cutting, or physiological stu-...... stu-...... 'dies, (deprivation of all necessities, administration of timed elec- , k . , trical shocks, etc.) they are hurt. Laboratory bought or bred ; r animals sutler enough, but pound animals have been socialized and loved, and have unreliable genetic backgrounds, v , Pounds were created for the sole purpose of holding animals for i-v so many days, if not adopted, then painlessly euthanized. Pounds - ere not meant to be w arehouses to supply cheap animals for the convenience of researchers. 1 'x NOT ONLY research can take these ex-pets. They can be taken ia;. x for pit bull training, (although illegal) they use kittens, puppies, :a and cats to develop the pit bulls lust for blood, and to bring out the killing urge. Also for shark bait, for coastal areas, that don't have pound seizure, for snake food, or to be sent to Asian countries for food. Dogs and cats there are considered delicacies. The Humane Society bill can not stop medical research cither. We do feel the researchers should get their ow n subjects. They would also use less animals that way. Several studies have already banned pound seizure, such as Florida, Hawaii, Pennsy lvania, l-vania, etc. This has not devasated research, in any way. STOPPING pound seizure involves only about 1 500 animals. This bill is mainly a moral issue. It involves public trust. Few people would trust their pets to local animal controlles, if they knew about Utah's mandatory seizure laws. , Please sign the Humane Society of Utah's petition, and get -- others to sign it. The pounds should be used the way they were :;cv intended to be. on: .' Karin Britten "V,! 1371 N. Main Farmington 'P.K |
