Fourth quarter ceramics students at the Bountiful Art Center claim that working in clay has its own mystique. Not only is it relaxing and therapeutic, but tends to become addicting. SOME CLAIM it might be the exotic names of the glazes, such as Shanner Red, Spotted White, Ohoda Kaki, Yamakahara, Spodumene, Volkos Red, 214 Brown, Chun, or Albany Black. Some claim it is the excitement ex-citement of seeing the results of the firing after experimenting experiment-ing with new combinations of the glazes on a particular pot. The results are often unex-pected-sometimes a little disappointing, but more often elating. THE excitement that accompanies ac-companies the unloading of the kiln after a glaze firing is reminiscent of the anticipation anticipa-tion of unwrapping presents on Christmas morning. As the construction on the ceramics studio nears completion, students are looking forward to working in the more spacious studio. THE ADDITION of a walk-in damp box, an essential step in drying pottery to ready it for firing, will also provide a badly needed addition to the facility. Beginning, intermediate, and advanced classes in wheel-thrown and handbuilt pottery, both credit and non-credit, non-credit, will be offered at the center fall quarter. Classes will begin in October, and class schedules will soon be available at the center, 2175 South Main, or will be sent on request by calling 581-8820. CREDIT AND non-credit classes in oil painting, water- color, still-life, portrait, drawing, photography, children's art workshop, jewelry making, and art history his-tory will also be offered again fall quarter. Occasionally volunteers are needed at the center to act as gallery attendant after regular officer hours. Anyone who has two or three hours a month to spare and would be interested in helping with the exhibits is cordially invited to call the center and leave that information with the secretary. secre-tary. THE RENTAL-sales exhibit will remain in the gallery at the art center through August and September, and will continue con-tinue as an on-going service. In addition, several excellent exhibits by visiting artists are planned for the months ahead. Summer gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., closed Sunday and Monday. |
