Show ill Sprays For (SrassEi offers A series of insecticide sprayings will begin this week in an effort to control grasshopper and other insects at Hill Air Force Base. EXTRA PRECAUTIONS will be taken this year to insure in-sure no spraying is done within 500 feet of the base perimeter fence or when the wind velocity exceeds five knots or when the prevailing wind would carry any insecticide insec-ticide off base. The spraying will be done only as needed with Malathion proiected bv a ro tary mist blower. THE GROUND application method was adopted after an aerial spraying iast year resulted in massive bee deaths in Weber County. Weber County beekeepers have charged that the aerial insecticide spray was wafted off base by a heavy wind and accounted for the decimation of the bee population. THE INSECT population at the base has to be carefully controlled because the insects attract seagulls which are hazardous to flying operations. opera-tions. State and local authorities have been advised about the insecticide to be used, and the method of application and the spraying procedure. AGENCIES ADVISED of the spraying operations include both the Weber and Davis County units of the U.S. Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, the Utah State University Extension Exten-sion Service, the Utah State District Agriculture Inspector's Inspec-tor's office and the Utah State Entomologist, mnm |
