Show Local Boys Attend State FFA Convention Last Week in SLC Fourteen members of the PI. Grove Chapter, Future Farmers of America, attended the State Convention In Salt Lake City last weekend. Meeting's were held on March 25 and 26. Willis Banks, chapter adviser, accompanied the FFA members. The group stayed at the Hotel Utah. Also going was the chapter Sweetheart, Marilyn Swenson and two of her attendants, attend-ants, Jackie Noble and Connie Fugal. The sweethearts were accompanied ac-companied by Mrs. Lee Swenson. Outstanding speakers were present at the various convention conven-tion sessions. Gov. George D. Clyde gave the address of welcome wel-come and stressed the importance of Agriculture in Utah's economy. State Vice President Paul Con-over Con-over spoke on the importance of leadership and reported on the 1959 National Leadership Conference Con-ference which was attended by all state officers. The special delegates session of the convention was attended by LeRoy Jacklin and Lenn Anderson, Ander-son, Pleasant Grove Chapter representatives. rep-resentatives. Reports to the meeting's were given by Wayne Smith, state reporter re-porter and Jim Thomas, of Patterson, Pat-terson, Georgia, National FFA president. Stephen Adamson, of the American Fork chapter, told of the National Youth Power Congress Con-gress which he had attended as Utah's representative. Also, the chapter Advisor Award was given. giv-en. At the last session on Friday, Spanish Fork won the parliamentary parliamen-tary procedure contest. On Saturday, the state president, presi-dent, Harry MaVkas, gave a report re-port ' on the past year's activities activ-ities and expressed his gTatitude at being a state officer. An address ad-dress was given by Dr. Harvey L. Taylor, vice president of the Brig-ham Young University, in which he stressed the importance of agriculture and leadership in the future. Also during the session special FFA awards were given with LeRoy Le-Roy Jacklin of the Pleasant Grove chapter winning a $300 Standard Oil of California scholarship and Earl Woolley receiving the State Farmer degree. At the meeting the winners of the new state officer of-ficer elections were announced. They will head the FFA activities activi-ties for the coming year. The highlight of the convention was the Sweetheart Banquet. A-wards A-wards were presented to Honorary Hon-orary State Farmers, State Farmers, Far-mers, American Farmers, Green-hand, Green-hand, and FFA foundation. This was followed by a parade of sweethearts. Alice Stout won the State FFA Sweetheart title and was presented a bouquet of roses by Jim Thomas, National FFA president. , The members returned home after the banquet.
